Subject: JACK STRAW
While the aud recording may not be amazing, check out the sbd and listen to phils bass on the jack straw, this show is severly underrated and this jack straw proves it.

Went to all Ventura shows and listening to this one is pretty good overall. Whoever gave it a 1 is just not listening. It sounds pretty nice to me. I remember seeing Jerry sitting in a chair behind the stage shaking his head like he was really stoned, trying to shake it off. And a double encore to boot. Not a very common occurance in Dead shows. They must have been on.

Man ,I had this tape back in the 80's when I was a teenager, and I was just glad to have this show with a great Scarlet>Fire.Brent's playing was so tight back then.Friends of mine who went weren't all that impressed, but they played this tape all the time. What sounds good at the show ,and what sounds good on tape doesn't always match up.I went to some great shows ,and it seems no matter which recordings I hear they never quite capture what I witnessed, whereas some shows I thought were lame came out good on tape.Goes to show ,you don't ever know !

Subject: Rippin set! Great audience show.
I was quite pleasantly suprised about this show and how good it sounded from the audince quality perspective. It takes about 2 minutes to get used to the audience quality ( I have 95% sbds) so this was an aquired taste- I am very happy to have given it a shot.

The intro on bucket is slinky and sort of 'confised' as it is still beign refined as a new tune. The scarlet is very tight- great long inro- they jam for 1:31 before garcia hits the firts verse. Nice long fun intro. Crowd is into it but you do no hear but a few people. There is no crowd noice to this audience show. I had this blasitng last night on my way back from a family outing and it was on fire. Check out the other >warfrat. Jerry sings sooo sweetly- his inflexctions adn holding of the notes lets us know he is not just singing this for the heck of it- he is into it. NFA to close was tetering on 70's style jamming.

I give this show a 3.5 starts for sound and a 5 stars for what I hear iin the music, unlike rob001 below who has decided he needs to type in all caps adn be angry about wind and heat...dude get oover it. The show rocks. I wish there was a sbd of it. Scarlet>fire is 25 minutes long. It may have been hot but the miusic never sufffered.
I was not there and saw my first show 4 years after this one. A ocnservative 4 stars for thi sh0w. You will nto be disappointed unless all you every listended to you entire life is A+ sbds.

This show deserves respect in the lineage of deadshows.

The show and recording rips! I don't know what the naysayers are smoking or not smoking but this is a great AUD.

I don't think this as poor as some think. No, the recording isn't great, but I've heard way worse. I have only heard the second set so far so take that into account. I really like 79-84 a lot, so maybe I have some bias there, but I've found this to be a pleasant listening experience. Definitely better shows, for playing and SQ out there, but without the sbds available anymore, we must embrace the audience recordings, and I love it. The FEEL!!

Subject: WEEKEND
YES, EVERYONE SAYS THESE SHOWS SUCKED DUE TO JERRY'S ADDICTION. WHILE IT WOULD BE EASY TO FORM THAT OPINION IF YOU LISTEN TO DAVID GANS ACCOUNT OF THIS WEEKEND, OR GIVE AN UNINFORMED REVIEW BASED ON THE "SHOW ON TAPE"

I REMEMBER IT VIVIDLY AS I WAS THERE. IT SO SO FUCKING HOT I MEAN HOT! DID I SAY IT WAS HOT. YEA, REALLY HOT AND WINDY. REALLY FUCKING WINDY. OHH, I ALMOST FORGOT, THE DUST, SO FRIGGIN HOT,WINDY AND DUSTY THEY SHOULD HAVE CANCELED.

I MEAN IT.
IT WAS AN AWFUL VENUE. A RACE TRACK. A DIRT RACE TRACK. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH DAVID'S ACCOUNT OF THIS SHOW "WORST EVER", "TURNING POINT", ETC, BECAUSE HE WAS NEITHER ON STAGE OR IN THE AUDIANCE. HE SPENT MOST OF HIS TIME BACKSTAGE DRINKING FOR FREE OR IN AN AIR CONDITIONED TRAILER. I REMEMBER BOB HAVING TO STOP MID SONG AND WIPE HIMSELF DOWN HE WAS SWEATING SO MUCH. I REMEMBER BILLY GETTING SAND IN HIS EYE'S AND HAVING TO STOP AS WELL. HARD TO GIVE A GOOD PREFORMANCE IN THOSE CONDITIONS. THE HEAT,WIND, AND DUST WERE ABSOLUTLEY RIDICULOUS.
I HAVE GEN 0 TAPE'S OF THE ENTIRE WEEKEND THAT I MADE MYSELF AND THEY ARE INAUDIBLE DUE TO THE WIND. ANOTHER IN THE LONG LIST OF HAD TO BE THERE TO UNDERSTAND SHOWS. DONT BLAME IT ALL ON JERRY'S PROBLEM.

Subject: Different Take.....
This audience tape starts a little warbly but gets its sea-legs by West L.A. I know this show is like the ugly step-child to the night before but it really deserves a better fate. The second set is hypnotic and filled with vivid imagery and echolalic verbosity. Pretty hot pre-drums Scarlet>Fire and than Jerry takes a break to chase the dragon. Space>Other One is lucid and full of intricate ensemble jamming. 18 minutes later Wharf appears from the mist with Garcia getting full use from his torn vocal chords. Like the China Doll from 7/30 he pours his heart into each lyric enciting the crowd into erotic pleasure. The jam that ensues is a Mydland-fest coupled with a nice helping of the tiger axe. Garcia's hands were caked with residue throughout the show and he probably hadn't showered in days but this is pure '83 magic and is a hidden gem amongst many more recognized recordings.

Subject: Not as good as Saturday
My 2nd show, and not nearly up to the level of the previous day. You can skip this one. Although the Saturday Night encore on Sunday was kind of fun!

Subject: Jerry's Brithday
For a Jerry birthday show, there were very little highlights to celebrate. Jerry looked out of it and was barely able to acknowledge the crowd as they sang happy birthday to him before Jack Straw.
