hey, first night 1984 east coast spring tour at hampton... like the unusual dayjob/dont ease 1st set bookends but the scarlet/fire and estimated rule the show, and set stage for lovely, rockin' conclusion. bobby pretty out there w/ the enthusiasm level, and like it. very nice audio quality that draws you right in. thx for this killer effort.

Subject: Talking drum...
During Fire Mickey came out from behind his kit and played talking drum. First and only time I saw him do that during a tune. Of course he did it many times during drums. Anyway it comes through very nicely on the recording. During intermission this military dude, huge, took his clothes off on the floor and took a piss. He was clearly freaking out on psychedelics. A circle of heads moved away as he rolled around on the floor. Quite scary actually, broken glass stuck in his back. Then two security guys came and picked this huge man up by the arms and legs and he relaxed and was carried off. Considering my own condition at the time it was...un-nerving. But the Dead came back out and all was well in the World. Show (and Hampton) deserve the reputation they have.

Minglewood is 8 minutes, wicked and devilishly dirty. Does anyone recall a longer Minglewood?

Good sounding AUD with several great versions of songs.
1) West LA - sweet Garcia solo
2) It's all over now - check out Brent scatting along with his organ solo...bad ass! Brent was the MAN (but it's all over now :)
3) Scarlet > Fire - Great transition with unique tempo, percussion, and echo effects during Fire. This is one of the coolestFires I have ever heard.

forget the field behind the school. we city folk stupidly pitched our tent in a ground depression. came back to a tent pond!

Sometimes the 80's dead gets flac. Yet, while it is completely different than 70's dead, I find myself returning to it more often than the 70's. I love the 84-85 era.
I grabbed the Scarlet > Fire off this show without much thought and put it on my Ipod. I was out running and it came up. Normally, I am quite bored by the Scarlet Fires and skip them these days...but this one was absolutely on fire. Seriously, top 5-and the audience tape by Rob is classic and part of why the song rips.
This is a great show and tape.

I was there and will never forget it, one of my first shows was close to the front then went upstairs. Scarlet->Fire was one of the greatest moments of my life. The jam between Scarlet and Fire was excellent and the Jerry wanting to play eyes thing repeated several times that evening.
East coast crowds were most intense and I saw a bunch of shows there and more out west outdoors.
I am convinced that Dan piped the Fire echos through the house sound system and I remember Brent looking around amazed when the fire fire fire fire on the mountain echos started firing.
I cannot explain it and this was one of the greatest moments of my dead life, I will never forget it and this recording allows me to relive it again and again, only danger now is that I will play it every day and it will get old. Nah, that will never happen.

We slept in the car behind the abandoned school.... Do you remember the Winnebago that got stuck and had to be pushed out of the mud?? This was just an incredibly good time, and the shows were just the best part of it... Damn, it was fun...... Because of it Hampton ended up being my favorite indoor place to see them....
