Sometimes WE just know..
This show has an outside the box set list.
1) Alabama>Promised-rocks so hard
they must follow with a ballad
enter FOTD
Bottom- unique in that it didn't stay long
in the rotation but obviously
a number of tunes very similar
for Weir to run the slide.
ROSES-always welcomed
Music>Deal- both hot
how do they keep em under 10 minutes
Concise set that sparks nicely
2) Stranger>Cumberland
Great combo,
would be unexpected in Set One
Downright killer opening Set Two
Gloria-Caught a nice one Richmond 85
besides Satisfaction a sure sign the band
was having fun.
Do it in the Road-Some folks get spastic about this tune? Just take it for the party tune it is.
Not Terrapin or WRS or Morning Dew just
WHY DON'T WE DO IT IN THE FLIPPIN' ROAD!
ever feel like that? Sure have myself.
"no one will be watching"
MAKING LOVE TOGETHER IN A LAND
TIME FORGOT
During this time period I would regularly experience out of body, end of the world stuff
check out Drumz>Space (especially SPACE)
Rest of show perhaps more standard for this era although Uncle John's sweet out of space.
This show certainly points toward some
of the musical trips the band
would pursue in 1985

band Tripping?
Were they? I dunno, seems for me it would be hard at times for them to not just break out laughing in the middle of a song and say sorry it sounds too weird to us even if it sounds great to you, then again that'd be hard to do at a paid concert, so who knows, I suppose maybe they are used to that and are able to keep thinking and performing even if tripping , but when they are jammig and I know it from listening don't they forget what song they are playing, well hopefully a majority of them do remember, but whatever this show does sound good, could just be they are at home and near home and are thinking the whole time about taking their dog for a walk as soon as they get home around
12:45 that night. Its nice to hear them mumbling and u can tell they feel fine at home etc. not like planning five NY shows.

i was there
i got dosed backstage,i think the band was dosed as well cause the whole show was strange as any i've been
to.i started peaking during gloria and the energy was unlike any show i've been to,and i've been to about 180 from 78-95.yeah they were "off" in spots but when weren't
they.lol besides the 85 red rocks,84 ventura, the post coma 87 oakland shows(see stella blue) the 84 ,85 greeks this was right up there for me as classic dead moments!

Although a lot of stuff in the second part of set 2 is smokin',
the Gloria and Why Don't We Do It are just plain awful, and it sounded like they had only heard the latter one maybe once: they really had no idea how the song went and kept on doing it wronger with each verse! Blech! Drums and Space were really good, a real trip fest. The first set was good, not great. Anyone who rates the overall show with more than a 3 is purely promoting hype. This recording is fraught with disc skips after Space, and is a clear SBD but that's not a good thing. Too clear and you hear everything, warts and all, and the band were very warty this night.

Best Space ever!
Turn it up loud (best with a good set of headphones) and prepare to lose your mind. The rest of the show is top drawer too. Not a bum note in the whole show. And the sound quality is amazing.
5 out of 5 stars

One of my favorite Strangers doesn't get much better than this one. Jerry's solo is so killer and the rest of the band is right on point. A bad ass Do It In The Road and awesome trippy Jam into Drums. This BCT run is the shit. Music Never Stopped also has a nice tight jam. This Cumberland Blues is one for the ages. My gosh Gloria, Mr. Fantasy,Lovelight WOW !! absolute stunner. This Franklins is up there in my book. There are some seriously hot shows in the '84 tour. Starting off with the 2 night Hampton Run,Philly,OH,IN,Alpine The Greeks and Ventura were totally killer Augusta is a monster in a quaint venue and this BCT run is so sick. This show is probably a top 20 for me. I don't wanna here about Darkside or that Jerry's burnt by this time or Junkie Jerry etc. this is it. So out there....but tight as a bell. Phil's bass lines in '84 were so sonic and perfect sounding. Brent's trippy keyboarding and arsenal of sounds were ooozing out of that synth & B-3. He was putting out some crazy bells and buzzer atari sounding shit that you can practically see without taking anything. Brent was great in 83 and '84 He wasn't going to far in 82 yet things got weird for him a year later in the ever funky 1983.
I agree Secret and nice review. Budsforu I like your hanldle but Dead wrong on the level of playin and were the band is at on this leg of the tour. Yes Jerry was at his worst with Herion and Coke but I really dont think it hurt that much. The review below mentions creativity, I also think it was more of a happenin' time and lots of creativity was coming in and the band was more inspired than alot of Heads or print thinks. There were some bad rough dull lost nights but not that many and even those, you can find what I love the most. The slower Jerry tunes like the heart felt Peggy-o-'s,China Doll,Black Peter,Comes a Time,Row Jimmy,Althea and one of my favorite's High Time. Played only twice in '84.

Great sound
This is a wonderful sounding show. As far as what was goin on with the crew that night , well...i thin kthey just pulled out some real treats for the crowd this night. First off , you not only have a second set Stranger (a rarer occurance) but a second set cumberland - and it sounds great !!! lol.
But then - Gloria!!! Wow - only played twice previously live, and only once in 1984 - Gloria was played a couple of times again in 85 before being put to sleep for several years until the 90's. And this version rocks hard right up there with my Favorite all time Gloria from Soldiers Field 1992. Do it in the road seemed like it was becoming a staple in the line up this year. It was busted out for the first time in june of 84 , but sadly never made it past 1985 in their rotation of songs. All the more making this a sweet sweet show. Bottom was another song making the rotatioin this year , but never made it much past 85 either. Which is ok - i dont imagine it would have gotten much better than this version. Bobbies slide work on the guitar fits nicly - very rooster -esque.
Seeing this kinda stuff is only a portion of why i love 80's shows. I think there was some creativity happening - some new avenues being explored- and it must have been a great time. Even Promised Land had a nice jam goin on at the end of it.
Add this one for a fun 80s show to your collection. Listen to Brent tickle the keys on Friend of the devil. Its juicy.
Post - drums UJB !!! Check some of this show out - if not , d/l the whole thing!

this show was really goofy...by the end of the run the boys had no songs left so they busted out all these oddball covers...at least the Why Don't We Do It was better than at the Greek... big fun

Beware of the digi-noise all over disc 3. You may want to go audience for post-Drums.
