I remember this show sitting rear stage with my friend Cooker and Fernald behind Mickeys kit..I remember Billy being hit and the bad vibe after the show...Sirius has been playing these shows as this day in dead history over the past 2 days..of course my kids are asking me about it.
Pretty good overall but on the downslope before jerrys coma..First set is pretty good with a decent Mississippi, West La and Esau but much of the show is pretty dismal with Roadrunner, Desolation row and hand jive..let's be serious here..not good songs and short sets! worst of the 3 shows.. 81, 82, and 83 are much better..this is worth a 3 rating.

I have an average board of this show, I put it on after listening to some 1994 dead. The difference was stunning, on this one Jerry is popping notes all over the place. No matter how burned out the Dead seemed in 1986, you can't tell from this one, it's quite a high energy affair. The jam into drums is really sweet. Too bad about the bottle.

It's sad but true, a bottle from up high behind the drums was hurled and pierced one of Billy's drums and hit him in the shoulder. I saw the whole thing. I was sitting 1st row right behind the drums. Billy Stood up and pointed his drum sticks back up into the crowd and then gave the finger, he was rightfully pissed. Short of this UnDeadHead like incident, the show was great, specifically the 2nd set. In between sets I watched Phil Spark a fat heater just before the lights went down, I did the same! haha
This Feel Like a Stranger is great, probably one of my favorite versions, jazzy, hypnotic, and even outright nasty jamming, Interesting song selection and well played show over all. The other night my wife and I got baked, listened to a bunch of tunes, danced around the living room and then kept the tunes playing as we layed down in bed to fall asleep. The drums on this tape were UNREAL that night> segued into Comes A Time, when we got up the next day, we both said "Do you remember listening to those drums last night?" It transported us away, like a magical trip, Like some magic drumming love machine, just fantastic!! And that feeling isn't easy to come by these days... IT WAS SO GOOD!! Great Recording, Great 2nd set.. Worthy!! Check out the DRUMS!!!

All I really remember was the rain inside the Civic Center (doubt that was real) and the show ending early and me wandering haplessly aound Providence for hours with lots of people I didn't know. Nice to hear the recording - the show wasn't as much of a downer as I thought right afterward.
Still, IMO the weakest of the three nights.
Show's a three, sound's a three.

If you need to beef up on 86's starting here is a good move. Well played throughout and the unusual set list make this nice. Obviously those who followed the band in later years will want to download the "oldies", Roadrunner, comes A time, hand jive. fun show. hate to hear about bottle throwing though.

This was a high and heavy energy show during a great run. The second set has an epic quality to it- check out the huge Stranger opener (monster Phil) and the pre-drums jam. The Comes a Time is amazing, poignant and close to perfection. With the abrubt ending thousands of high confused heads poured out into the street. Upon hearing the cause the next day, there was a big question in the air to the band's response. The second set Shakedown opener was there response, positive and strong! I recommend this show and the next night strongly.

...Or at least some of it. I was a fifteen year old Black Sabbath fan when I walked into the biggest circus of my life. I couldn't decide wether I wanted to see the Dead, who I knew only by Truckin and Casey Jones, or stay home and watch the NCAA basketball finals on TV.Besides all the colorful people and the old man holding up a piece of cardboard with pictures from a previous show for everyone to see, ( not selling them , just showing them )with all the shrooms, all the confusion, I just couldn't really get a handle on what exactly was going on. But I knew that I liked it and that I wanted to know more.
When Brent layed on the B3 during JBG it hit me like electricity running through my body. That was it , the bus had come by. Still haven't been able to track down a SB of this show , I have had a few audience recordings of this one but never a really good one. Ah , memeories...

There's no cut between Truckin and Johnny B. JBGoode was the set II closer. I heard the stories about Bill getting hit with a bottle too. The next night on my way in I saw everyone signing a huge banner that read "Sorry Billy." or something like that. These Providence shows were all very good. Kind of a small place compared to the baketball arenas the Dead usually played at this time.

I was also at this show (beautiful comes a time) and what happened was a drunken and obviously unthinking reveler ( I'm being nice) threw a bottle through one of Billy's drum heads. Billy was pissed and the Dead decided not to reward this behavior, so they did not play an encore.

I was at this show and I don't believe Johnny B Goode was the encore. I don't believe there was a encore this night. I remember Bobby sayin something about a broken drum or drummer and we'll see you tomorrow. Good audience recording.
