This was the only show I saw Tom Petty at. Hearing the news he died today bummed me out, which led me to lookup this outdoor concert I went to with my college love that so long ago summer.
It was an amazing time, I remember it clearer now after reading the reviews. I remember sharing this tripping experience with my college love Beth, the music, the sunshine, the brief rain, the rainbow, and camping in a field after the concert in our make shift blanket tent using the hatchback of the car.
One of my best Grateful Dead trips accompanied by the great Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

I'm reading D# for the bass bombs on Jack Straw. The sound is pretty good, and yes it was a an awesome show with one of the biggest PAs I saw them field in this era, especially the delay stacks were YUGE!

The purple paper and all my friends, only being my second show, I found what was to be the start of a long following. The Samson and Delilah alway one of my favorites. If you see the vid, Hey, Bob what is with the socks?

Pro-shot videos of this not only show the crowd breaking umbrellas and tarps out during rain, but also the crew covering up equipment with plastic sheeting.
Despite his condition, Jerry looks 10x more lively than he did in '95. I guess a diabetic coma isn't as bad as the depths of heroin.

Subject: Not as Bad as you might think
Subject: Not as Bad as you might think
Overall: Knowing that this was just a week or so before Jerry's coma, this show is not as bad as you'd think. The recording is not great, but it will certainly suffice if you want to hear a show you attended many moons ago.
The scene: I went to this show with Brian R, his older brother Chris, and Pat M., and maybe a few others. We then met up with a bunch of other kids from our high school in Pittsford NY once we were inside. This was my second show. Dylan/Petty opened and my memory is that it wasn't that memorable. Then again, I ate two sugar cubes. Weird vibe for the show. Saw a big fight break out on the floor. Then our friend Tim H got lost on the way in and by the time he found us, he was deep into a bad trip. Sun, then rain, then a pretty cool sunset and a nice summer night.
The music: not as bad as you'd think. Phil makes some strong appearances. Bobby and Brent also try to bring up the energy that Jerry is definitely lacking. Jerry flubs a lot of lyrics and his guitar playing is strong at times, but not so much at others. The front section of the second set was broadcast for Farm Aid (hence, Bobby's remark about this being a agrarian nation before Wheel). But overall, this is really only to be listened to for nostalgia's sake.

this is not pretty, people. this show should be avoided. the gimme some lovin is in the worst ever hall of fame and there has been some nasty--in a bad way--gimme some lovins. the rest is just awkward. also, our AGRARIAN NATION is now under occupation by CON-AG and other mind numbingly evil forces.

Subject: Woke up for the pre-space wheel
The stand alone fire and pre-space wheel were a direct response to fan complaints of song placement predictability. Starting with the Anniversary shows in 85, the band embarked on slightly more creative song placement. This was a quick fix solution to a band that should have broken up in 1974.

I was there too it was my last show of many and I thought it was Buffalo poop, then and now. The Space was OK but brief, setlist and soundquality OK but 4 Stars?.
I think we need more discretion. Other than the rainbow over Rich Stadium after the downpour this show was kinda sad.

My first show. I'm glad that the sound quality is this good. I have never been able to find a tape of this show, but have looked for a while. The show is better than I remember. I was way up in the stands, and my head was up even farther, so I didn't hear the show as clearly as I can now. Great quality here. Can hear every note Phil plays. Jerry wasn't at his personal best, but...he wasn't in the best of health.

Went just for the trip! Left a fan. Felt like I had been taken to a new planet. Had a lot of fun with the Cosmic Cowboys. Good parking lot scene too. Couldn't stay for Dylan and Petty. Had a cooler full of cold ones and a box full of fireworks to play with. Thanks to Dave, Keith and Grandfather Dead [whoever you are] for the great introduction to the music that changed my life.

Bobby tipped his cards right before "The Wheel", mumbling something about the USA being an "agrarian nation". Other than his introductions to acoustic songs like "Monkey and the Engineer" and his occasional dedications of songs to specific fallen souls, I believe this is the only time that he explained a supposed meaning behind a particular song before they played it.

Thought I was the only one that didn't have a terriffic time there...My ex-girlfreind traded our wine for a hit off somebody's bong while I was headed up off the field to try to make some sense of it all...she got sick & we had to leave before Petty came on...barely remember Dylan. (was he there?) Met a Blond Goddess from San Fran (so she said) who suggested that I come back & meet her friends... but NOOOO, I was on a mission & had to get back to my Chick (what was I thinking!?)(stuuuupid)(always mr. "stay the course")...If you're still out there, Goddess of San Fran...remember squirting me, the Joe Walsh wannabe with the tiedie shorts & combat boots w/ cowboy hat? With yer squirtgun? gads. my brain. aak.

Show is a lot better then I remember, Jerry sounds pretty good for going into a coma shortly thereafeter. Not the most energentic I saw,but fun anyway. Remember leaving before Petty was done. Was way too toasted to spend that much time trapped in Rich Stadium.

this was a hot show all around the band the weather everything except dylan and petty. bob wasn't in his best form around that time and the mix of fans was evident off the floor. i hane great photos of this show and on my way up to buffalo from poughkeepsie i sat and met richard manuels wife from the band! she showed me and my buddy tons of photo albums with every rock and roll hero you could imagine. she was on her way to a detox up in canada and this was right after richard killed himself. i love rich stadium 4th of july shows the two there are anyway. as always the setlist proved to be short but interesting. i'm a deadhead of the early eighties and nineties.

I got this on cassette back in April '87 and mine starts with Weir saying "...it never rains on the Fourth of July"...of course, by the middle of Fire, you can hear the tapers talking about seeing the rainbow!
I remember there was some cool spoken word rap-type music during the break...Burroughs or Ginsberg, maybe?

This FOB is the better of the two recordings....it has a nice meaty texture with plenty of PHIL and the devils. PLus this show smokes...the first set is short with great renditions of Duprees, and TJed..second set is reminiscent of an early eighties show with a smoldering Cold Rain>Fire and a sweet Gimme Some Lovin..out of a painkilling space....pass the vicatin....
