Subject: Summertime!
Ah, sweet memories of summer! This is one of my favorite 'Sunny-Day' tapes to play, the sound really reflects that summertime feeling. What a perfect day, no expectations on the first night and whamo, magic!

The previous reviews hit on all the high points, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bobby falsetto screams during Estimated, he really goes off with neck veins popping out, eyes crossing and spit flying! If you like the one on View/Vault at Shoreline, this one is even better.

BTW: Listening to the bonus tracks from the remastered Built to Last, is this the Foolish Heart? Why didn't they include the sparkling jam that followed?

What could top these shows? Think of this as the build up to the monster shows in Eugene that were Brent's last west coast shows (so sad). Glad the music and spirits live on thru the music!

Subject: Estimated/Foolish!
I remember this show fondly...my friend and me camped(illegally)
next to the Sacramento river. Good times. So good to have this again...
Bass geeks: Spring-summer '90 shows are Phil zone heaven. Phil switched basses that spring (shocking isn't it?) to a Ken Smith 6-string, and it's just popping all over this. The insane sound and wider neck of this bass really affected his playing style (and consequently the whole band) during this period. Listen to the end jam of 'Estimated' and the main groove of "foolish" for some serious bass bombs.
Not to mention some beautiful interplay from Brent. It was my last Brent show. He went out blazing. I will always miss him for the energy and color he brought to their sound in what I felt was their greatest period. (now I'm gonna shield myself from the barage of retorts that is sure to follow---to each his own!!!!)

This one gives me goosebumps!! Brent and Jerry just melt together throughout. Some very powerful, emotional strumming from Jerry, too. One of my all time favorite versions on all fronts. Black Peter, Foolish Heart, Wheel, China>Rider......what else to do but keep on listening! Beautifully mixed show. Clarity is the order of the day. 1990 Spring-Summer---Jeez, what would we have been hearing by Fall 1990 and Spring of 1991 w/ Brent still there.....? It was just SO GOOD before 7/26/90.

I don't know if is the sound quality that brings it out, but I just love Mydland. Easy Love You is so energized. Freaking awesome.

Subject: standard show?
i am confused by seeing that in another review. sound quality on this one is excellent. with the following qualifier: i have not yet listed to set I, isn't the 2nd set what it's all about? the only quibble i can even think of is jerry singing the third verse of china cat twice (i saw him do that more than once, so, jer, you get a pass on that; lol). his leads are crisp and the entire band is with him every step of the way. best thing about this recording is that it lives up to the memory i have of this being one of the better shows that i ever saw (qualifier: never saw 70s or earlier, saw shows from 85-95). if you like the way the band played in set II, then checkout/download 03-27-88.

I'm seeing a lot of reviews here that make this show sound like it had a "few" highlights. This show packed a ton of energy and the band came out firing in the 2nd set. I haven't heard anybody mention here that this was the date of their 25th anniversary although it was never brought up or noted at the show. Coupled with the fact that it was a full moon, I thought we might get a "Dark Star" out of the deal. The jam after "Foolish Heart" is one of the best pre-drums ever and I thought this is where we would see the nightfall of diamonds. However, the version of "Black Peter" is as good as any ever played and it's an overall stellar show. I agree that 1990 was a banner year for the band but don't think this show or run of shows doesn't belong in the same breath as the rest.

Subject: Solid Matrix!
Nice show! The jam out of foolish reminds me of the jam out of the scarlet>fire from the 10/31/90 show at Wembley Arena. Easy to Love You is a nice bonus and the Estimated is solid. Good Matrix!!

Subject: solid Cal Expo run
This may not be the best run of shows the Dead played at this venue, but it's solid throughout. The 1st set is a bit shaky but the song selection is great. Jerry seems inspired throughout the night. Bob is the loose cannon on this night and flubs/forgets a chunk of Queen Jane.
The 2nd set is were the sparks fly. Anytime the band opens a set with Uncle John's you know it's going to get crazy. UJB leads into a freight train of a China Cat that finds Jerrry peeling off THE solo of the night. From there, the band keeps dealing aces, especially the "Fire On The Mountain" Jam out of Foolish Heart. Very cool and well explored jam. Everything else seems a bit anti-climatic but worth the listen.
I always had fun at this venue and this 3 night run was no exception.

Subject: Show Highlight
Overall (IMHO), this is not a standout show by 1990 standards, I thought there were better summer and spring shows...But, that being said, the jam after Foolish Heart is one of the best pre-drums jams I have ever heard the Dead do. Jerry's Midi work is just gorgeous....Phil is just flawless and very adventurous pretty much the whole show, but especially during the Foolish>Jam!! Right when you think it's over, Jerry just wants to keep going trying out new Midi sounds....

Subject: Nice set 2
To get it out of the way, Bobby royally screws up the Queen Jane, forgetting lyrics multiple times. Bummer for me since I really like this song.

But the 2nd set pre-drums of:

Uncle John's Band-> China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Estimated Prophet-> Foolish Heart

is sweet! The Estimated is awesome, and I am not really that much of an Estimated fan! Plus a really cool jam (as was said by a previous reviewer) out of Foolish Heart, sounds almost Scarlet-like at the beginning, I did not look at the setlist the 1st time I listened to this, I kept thinking, are they really gonna play Scarlet before drums??? Eventually it morphs into a Scarlet/Foolish-like hybrid jam before sequeing into drums.

Great separation and clarity of the individual instruments in this recording too.

Recommended!! :-)

Revised: Ok, on relisten it is more of a Fire/Foolish jam, not Scarlet/Foolish... But regardless, way cool!

Get all three nights here. The sound quality
is awesome and the performances are all killer.
You can't go wrong with any of the Cal Expo
or Shoreline shows from this run.

Subject: Spring/Summer '90 rules
Got to be one of the best tours overall in a really long time. Got both tightness and out there stuff, and sound is at a premuim. Every song is just so well played.
When I listen to spring/summer 90 shows, I always wonder where they would have gone. Cus they were on there way somewhere completely new.
I love Bruce and all and Vince grew on me, but the sheer energy of Mydland/Garcia could not be replicated and they knew that. Anyway its neither here nor there anymore..:-(
Wish I would have been at this show. High Time is so good its pathetic. Easy to love you rules. Sick set lists. Great recording of a great show.
This show really is a 5. A must have for all collectors.

Subject: Beautiful Show
One of my favorite shows from 1990. Wonderfully crisp recording. Easy, Hightime,Birdsong, standout to me in the first set. Uncle Johns into China Rider is some sweet Jerry love. Amoung the other highlights of this fun show, is a uniquely fresh sounding jam out of Foolish Heart. Check it out. I will never forget listing to a tape of this show, with my wife, in the maternity ward, at night, after my wife delivered our first child earlier that day.

Subject: This was my first show...thanks!
I loved every minute of this show, though I broke the rules my brother 'set' for me...don't go alone, and don't do shrooms...well, what can I say? It was great, so was the second night, which I'll download next. I had this on tape, but they wore out, so I'm archiving it on CDs as well as burning my car-copy.
I'm so stoked...thank you.
