Well I couldn't wait to hear the Bird Song with Carlos Santana!!! I would have to wait a little, my source sent me the night before by mistake first (4/27) , and I was quite impressed. I really enjoyed that show so 2as fired up to hear the next night. Ok, Bird Song is a mess..Vince can't wait to do his Brent impersonation, he's all over at the first notes of the song, ugh, then I'm like where's Carlos??? Everybody is doing the me,me,me jam, building up , getting louder and louder, nobody is listening to each other, what happen to peaks and valleys, too many people, too much digital instrumentation! Sorry, but I was disappointed.

This was my 5th Dead show, but that weekend in Vegas was the first time we traveled to see them / stayed at a Hotel etc. We drove 32 hours "straight" from Terre Haute, IN. - went right to the parking lot on Saturday afternoon. Went out for the night and then slept 8 hours.
The reviews are right, it was a great vibe in Vegas that weekend. (went back for all the subsequent shows in Vegas)
Had an AMAZING time at this excellent show and then left the lot to drive back. Fell asleep at the wheel outside of Winslow Arizona, and flew the rest of the way home. (thanks Mom) --- but it was worth it!!

We are coming up on 20 years and that will mark 20 years ago we rolled into Vegas in the 71 VW bus selling our Calvin and Hobbs "Dancin with the Dead" T-shirts. It also marks the day I married my wife Dianne and we had the time of our lifes in full wedding gear in the Stadium. Does not seem all that long ago but we are talking about doing a road trip like we did so many times back in the day. Life was very happy and easy back then:-)

This was amazing. My wife, my son. My little brothers first show. Blue unicorn! Need I say more?
I called Jack Straw to open and Box to close.
Hot hot day. The slot machine woven into space and the grin on Bobbys face.
Rockin my baby boy to sleep to Crazy fingers.
The whole floor of the hotel on the strip was filled with US. All the doors were open and what a party.
"If you hear that same sweet song again then you'll know why"

Wow very heavy vibes here, would've loved to experience with all the fam...nothing forced in this show as per review below, that was harsh. The wharf rat is exceptional and cant say enough of the bird song as well. I just wonder what was said during the making of the list before hand, a conversation i would have love to been fly on the wall for...GET IT!

what a girating wild sound the band has with Hornsby. It takes a real genius to step up to the plate with the think tank coolers of jam. Bonus paying out in pure flashing hearts! I hear a little of that late school Jerry snarl come out a few times this show. Something that always makes me smile... and just a little sad for the old guy. Its like as if Rudolph took over driving the slay for santa... but the old guy still has to grab the reigns once in a while and let out the old chorus just one more time. Also, I think that Deal sounds fine in the second set. Nice when it doesn't have to ramp up constantly as it usually needs to in the first.

Great sounding stream. Phil is real punchy. This whole weekend was so full of energy. Whether at the shows or at night on the strip and the casinos--so many Heads--comedy!!! Both days were just a blast. Santana and Hornsby really were a catalyst for some energetic playing from the Band. First set is a strong one right out of the gates. That proud, regal Hornsby piano just ROCKS. Outstanding, energetic versions of all songs, save for a standard Me & My Uncle>Big River combo. The Birdsong is one of the fattest versions out there. Big Bird Song.
Very well-played,fluid second set. The back end w/ Other One and Wharf Rat was a treat. Even the Box of Rain encore has a crispness to it...played w/ intention and love.
Full moon, crazy spring vibe---my highlight was a quick conversation with Bill Graham while he was stopped on his Honda enduro at one of the entry gates. BONUS!!!! Worth a listen all the way through. They wanted to be be here for these 2 Vegas shows---no just going through the motions.

In from KU for a whirlwind weekend. Shows were great but very hot. Remember seeing a lot of people spraying water (?) all over the place. Carlos was fantastic as usual, as well as Vegas references and sounds. Long Birdsong with Carlos sent me flying, saw Jerry in eyes closed kaleidoscope. Back to Kansas on the redeye Sunday night. Back in class Monday morning with no sleep. The whole thing was surreal. Loved the Sugar Mag/Daydream 2nd set sandwich over both nights.

I drove out with a friend for these shows - we got caught on 70 in a big line for a train crossing, so I broke out my pack to have the first meal of the trip. I had packed just two things (besides beer): hot dogs and beans. We were just two hours into the trip and i discovered I had forgotten a key component of my meal plan. A can opener.
The shows were great. I found a backpack someone left in out truck during the sandstorm that blew in. It had American Flag overalls in them and some other random stuff. I cut them off at the knees and got many good shows from them. I was completely oblivious to Vegas and its' charms - loved the shows and was there for them alone -

Just thought of this today on the way to work and had to search it out. I was a freshman at CSU in Ft. Collins. We bailed class and road trip down for this show. Camped on Lake Mead. Hit a deer in the badlands on the way home but made it. Wow what memorys.. Fake tickets galore at this show. Carlos coming out was such a treat.. I got to see Carlos sit in with Phish a few years later in Mass.. History!
Thanks for the stream!

the birdsong is real nice but somehow comes off as a bit rote. jerry nails the lyrics to crazy fingers--this is a solid version.the second set just sort of plods--st. of circumstance never really worked too well on its own and deal limps along badly and this placement also was a failed experiment. didn't get any further than this.

Vegas and the Dead, what an incredible combination. Carlos and Jerry jamming on Bird Song was a sweet memory for me. All day in the son with the boys and then a psychedelic experience like none other through the lights of Vegas. The slot machines through Space added to the wonder of this truly amazing experience in my life. What's cool is the show 14 years later still sounds superb!! Anyone one doubtful of the later years Dead experience need only listen to this show to hear the magic that made it so wonderful.

Read the .txt file on this particular show before you download. There are some glitches/pops/digi statics/dropouts that, although they aren't a huge deal, somewhat detract from the continuity of the show as a whole. As many previous reviewers have stated, it is still an excellent show in terms of energy!

not sure what thymer is talking about, must be his/her crappy stereo. I listened to this show through headphones and thru my iriver dig op plugged into my stereo, and the sound is just fine. its by no means a 5 star sound quality or performance. id go 4*'s across the board.

This was a very good show. However, the recording levels were way too high. Especially when there are drums. The sound gets muffled.
I give the show four stars, however the recording I give 2.

Oh my god, I've been looking for this show for, well, I guess 13 years, now.. This was one of THOSE TIMES. Beyond Words, Mostly.
Amazing playing throughout, the double and triple and quadruple meanings in some of the lyrics on full display (not to mention all the gambling references, being in Vegas) ... altogether, one of those shows that reminded me why the hell I was doing this in the first place.
Sound Quality is Extra Rich, Thick and Solid.. Highlights (aside from the 18 min. Bird Song w/ Carlos, you mean?) Jack Straw as it is meant to sound, with a little Hornsby thrown in for Good Measure. The second set comes balls out with FIVE solid songs (!) before drums..Foolish.. Saint of Circumstance-- good as gone, again. Crazy Fingers, floating and etherial like a midnight stroll through Disneyland.. Then, Truckin'.. Ka-ZANG! Finally, yes, Deal...Ahhhh, DealDealDeal.
And that's just the first half of Set II.
What more can you say? Hell, what more do you need?
Certainly, during this particular afternoon the normal rules did not apply. Such, such a sweet one.
This show is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

In later years, the Silver Bowl became a regular stop for the boys and this mini run in late April were the first in LV for the 2 new members. In many ways this show represents the best and worst of the brief Welnick/Hornsby era. While Bruce provides great lead vocals on Jack Straw, Vince makes it almost unlistenable with the cheesy synth in the background. I don't entirely fault him, he was given a tiny little window of sound to create around Bruce's domineering baby grand, but I almost wish they had completely alternated songs so they didn't step on one another. Conversely, Vince gives strong support on Wang Dang Doodle and Bird Song, go figure.
Santana's sit in for Bird Song is tasty, and the jam really stretches out, clocking in at nearly 18 minutes. The second set has a rare 2d set deal out of a great truckin', again, Bruce really adds a depth of sound to the tune that Vince just could not hope to equal. I found the "casino" space a bit dull and uninteresting, how many minutes of slot machines sounds can you listen to before it bores?, but the back end has a nice conclusion.
Finally, the SBD recording is rich and thick, like a chocolate shake and puts the listener right there for the whole show.
RECOMMENDED

This was a wonderful show. The previous show started out with the WORST live sound I'd ever heard from the GD, but got a little better in the 2nd set.
Before this show, Phil came out and fooled around with his system for quite a while. When the band came out for Jack Straw, the sound was absoulutely pristine and LOUD LOUD LOUD! 30 seconds into the tune Bob got this huge grin on his face, and you just knew it was gonna be one of THOSE shows.
The Bird Song is incredible. When Carlos finally stepped up and fired off a lead, the place just exploded. I'm smiling as I remember this. :) :) :)
