Subject: Me and My Uncle
Subject: Me and My Uncle
Was in Atlanta visiting family and I agreed to take my 16 year-old cousin downtown to see what the scene was all about. Somehow, we bought two tix at face value and I bumped into my dear old neighbor and friend who had dropped out of school to follow the band for a while. He slipped me a tab and I had a profound, and profoundly fun experience.
After the show, a head asked my cousin and me what they played and I was too zonked to offer much of an answer. The guy correctly identified us as newbies and he wasn't unkind, but was clearly disappointed that we'd gotten to catch the show while he was stuck outside. Always hoped to run into that guy down the road and make some sort of amends.
Anyway, we got to my car and it wouldn't start. So there we are in downtown Atlanta, me still tripping balls, trying to figure out what to do. I called my cousin's parents just to let them know we were having car trouble and would be a little late getting back to their house. Then I called Triple A and the guy on the phone was probably being perfectly fine, but I was too confused and thought he was being unhelpful. I remember him saying, "Sir, this is the procedure we must follow, so if you want any help tonight, it's this or it's nothing." This is all from a payphone, of course.
Meanwhile, a guy wanders up and asks what the trouble is. I said, "Car won't start and I don't know what's wrong with it!" My cousin whispered for me to shut up because this guy might wanna rob us. But I trusted him. He had me open the hood and he identified corrosion on the battery nodes, which he wiped off with a discarded scrap of trash in the gutter. Then the car started fine. I thanked the guy and he asked if I could spare a little change and I gave him about $3 and everybody was happy. Called my cousin's house to let them know all was well, but my uncle was already making his way out to meet us. So we waited.
About 20 minutes later, there he was in his bathroom with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He instructed me to follow him and I said it was probably best if my cousin drove. "Dammit, Brian, she's 16! You're driving."
So there I was behind the wheel, dead bugs on the windshield pulsating, my cousin offering encouragement, support and the occasional, "Watch out for the curb!" Before we got back to the house, my uncle pulled over at a gas station. I was sure he had detected my bad driving and was going to give me some test he'd learned in the military. Instead he just said this was his local garage and they'd look at the car and have it ready the following morning. Then we all piled into my uncle's car and went home, with me trying to talk as little as possible. At one point, my uncle said, "Well, I don't mind potheads, as long as they leave me alone. But you don't know what it's like to be in the same room as somebody tripping on acid. Absolutely terrifying!" Oh, what a night.
This recording brings all those memories back, fresh as can be. Thanks all you beautiful heads.

Of all the great OMNI shows this one is an absolute stand out. Perhaps the best individual show of the 90's, and for OMNI shows that's saying a lot! This AUD (schoeps.gardner.4737.sbeok.shnf) is by far the best recording. One of the best AUDs ever IMHO. Thanks Tony Gardner for another GREAT job.
Thanks to the wonderful folks at GDTS we somehow always got seats in the first or second row of the balcony right over the Soundboard and Taper's Section, so this tape reproduces EXACTLY what the real show sounded like.
This performance of Stella Blue is so beautiful, so slow and sweet, and downright heavy - as in making the floor seem spongy - what a great AUD!!!
Unreservedly 5 Stars - great play list, great mix, the Band was so "ON" (after a show on 03-01 that I thought would be impossible to top at the time) - and this recording captures it so faithfully. Grab the .SHNs while you can!

if i could go back to "relive" a show it would be this one,a full day of fun (saw ren and stimpy for the first time in hotel that morning)HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY was in my head as we entered the Omni.i spent the show in the handicap sec. spinnig a green glow stick on a bungy with all kinds of room to dance. the energy in the place that night was amazing..the sound seem to have a fat well rounded feel that i knew would be captred nice on the tapes.sure there was some "off" nots and vocal miss cues which only seemed to get the boys smiling.caught on tape is Hornsby giving away the opening Ch1na notes with him showing a sly smile as he did it.the rider gets a little dodgey at the end with the vocals but they didnt mind and the croud gets a kick out of it...ITS ALL GOOD... the woman are smarter is as good as it gets Hornsby was a force of nature on sqeezebox, pumping that thing out in front of the stage for a solo, then Jerry realy steps up witht the MIDI trumpet sounds, did i hear Luis Armstrong ? at the time i knew it was somptin special.then came the jackhammer..never before(or since)have i ever seen any thing like this, two guys trying to make as much noise as they could and having so much fun doin it.Billy threw down the hammer, Micky bounce his stick of the beam it flew off in the air(it still orbits the earth) the energy pushed thats right PUSHED ! the crowd back in to there seats i fell to one knee. Bily and Micky ran to the front of the stage from behind there drums for a BIG hug (remember) i git goose bumps just thinkin bout it.Phils bass bomb to open the other one is like a sunami that washed over us baptising us for the start of the tour.i have all good memorise of this show,i got lucky after the show getting back to the hotel a taper traded a first gen. tape for soom floor space, the tapes are a little strechy(after all 19 years is a long time)but thanks to achives and deadheads i can listen to every big fat note THANK YOU

I've listened to over 300 shows in this archive and this one, suprisingly, is in the Top 5. One of those well-balanced audience tapes where you really appreciate the interaction between the Boys and the crowd. Not too much Bob or too much Phil, etc. Tremendous energy and vibe for a post-Brent era show. Never actually saw a show at the Omni and that's a shame. China Rider will blow you away and is worth the download.

Does anyone have a copy of the Dupree's Diamond newsletter that reviewed the "Chinese New Year" shows right before these. For some reason they were anywhere and everywhere at the March Omni shows, lying on the steps of the CNN center, Shakedown, etc. They were all over the place. So Anyway, When they listed the set list for the new bust out tunes : So many Roads, Corrina, Wave.., Long Way..., There was a type-o where the listed "Long Way to go Home" as " Long Way To Go Homo".I remembeer not getting in the second nite and just laughing my ass off all night long with the combination of that Funny Dupree's Paper and some other type of funny paper that I had came into contact with .I bought a Taper's ticket for the first night the day before the first show from this really pretty girl just walkin through some hotel lobby. Went in by myself and sat on the side toward Phil. After around 30 or so shows it was the First and only time I ever entered on a taper's ticket. Also there was a real nice scene at the Stone mountain campground as well well well.

This show is my favorite of all the Omni shows. It has it all, from the rockin' China>Rider(over look the biffed ending) and Terrapin to the sweet Stella Blue. This was a first date with my future (and current) wife. Also her first show. We sat behind the stage and watched everything Mickey and Bill did. The jackhammer was unreal! I agree that this is a highly over looked show and it totally worth the download. Good times, good times....;)

This show absolutely SMOKES and is completely unrecognized.
The boys start out with a solid first set that is pristine. Cold Rain and BrownEyed are nice, but Jerry lets loose in Loser.
The real action is all about Set2...The entire set is powerful and rockin. China>Rider roars and is one of my favs, but the band blows the ending. The Terrapin>Jackhammer is wicked. Post-drumz showcases a dark OtherOne and sweet Stella....
This is without a doubt one of the best omni shows along with 3/30/94, 4/5/91, and the entire spring '90 run.
