Subject: Pace the Halls and Rock the Walls
Me and some buddies from college drove up to this two night stand from UT Knoxville on spring break. While everybody else went to the beach, we went to Detroit to hang out in a parking lot in 20 degree weather with snow on the ground. Wouldn't trade the experience for the world.
The first night post-show was relatively placid. However, we ran into a group of about 20 or so friends, also from Knoxville who, were staying in the Kingsley Inn just down the road. In the name of solidarity, we moved our entourage to the Kingsley for the second night. Talk about the right move to make! It turned out that other than a small group of bewildered teenage basketball players, the whole place was filled with Deadheads! Let the games begin!
After the show that night, and a 20 minute ride in the open back of a pick-up in the freezing, sub 20s weather, we arrived back at the hotel. There was a large sign situated in the lobby such that it was the first thing you saw when entering the hotel. It read “Grateful Dead concert goers: Please go downstairs to the ballroom and stay there until you are ready to go back to your rooms and be quiet.” Sounded good to us.
Upon arrival in the ballroom, I felt much like I had returned to The Palace. The place was already decorated in the fashion which you would expect from Deadheads out to have a good time - balloons, streamers, tie-dyes, etc. There was also a very large, well stocked, UNATTENDED bar along one wall. Let me re-state that – a well stocked, UNATTENDED bar. Needless to say, the locks on the booze were quickly dispensed with and there were free drinks for all. I remember pacing the halls for most of the night with a bottle of champagne in one hand and two tall-boys in the other.
The hotel was laid out in two floors that both made complete loops, which seemed to encourage doing laps. Everywhere you went were open doors, with implicit invitations to come on in and enjoy the fun. It was like strolling down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. Here you had the pub with the N2O tank hidden discreetly in the corner, there you had the laid back, low lights “casual” bar. And the crowning jewel, hidden somewhere on the second floor behind an ornate door, the Presidential Suite. I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but I became one of the elite with Presidential credentials. Yes, the Deadheads had managed to infiltrate the Kingsley’s crowning jewel.
Upon admittance to the holiest of holies, I was pleased to find a group of 12 or so heads seated around an ornate conference table in leather bound chairs, listening to tapes of that night’s show (possibly the very ones we have here) and using the large expanse of polished mahogany as the world’s largest rolling tray. Eventually, as was bound to happen, the bellboys showed up at the door. To our amazement, they simply asked us to keep it down. The second time they knock-knock-knocked upon our door, they said something to the effect of “Look, we know you guys didn’t rent this room, but we’re going to let you stay here as long as you keep it down.” The third time was evidently just a bit too much and they finally evicted us.
Upon returning to our room, I found that one of my friends had found it a bit too crowded and jumped from our balcony to the next room, which was previously unoccupied. We had beds to ourselves and room service on the house. Upon checking out the next morning, we passed a group of very unhappy looking corporate types with clipboards in hand on their way in. Beating a hasty retreat, I reflected that we truly did pace the halls, rock the walls, and got out just before they blew.

Subject: first show, first review
This was my first show. I was nineteen from Northern Michigan and never saw an assembly of hippies like that. I had tapes and was in love with the dead before then. I never had the same great experience that I had that day at any of the shows thereafter. But I do have a great experience every other day listening to the grateful dead and reading reviews on archive.org Thank you!

My apologies, factman is correct, it was Wizard of Oz I was thinking of.....
I was at this show, and I remember being pretty let down by it. Although the setlist is, IMHO, to die for....China>Rider Saint>Foolish literally a dream come true for yours truly, but I remember it not being nearly as well played as the 3/23 night. China>Rider is strong, Saint trainwrecks at one point, Foolish is very good. Space is very cool with lots of interesting samples (i.e.-samples from Wizard of Oz). Miracle>Stella are strong, Throwin is average, NFA is a rocker!. Weight is great. In retrospect, I think it is a much better show than I recall.
The tracks are arranged so as to fit on 2 CD's. Indeed the Weight was the encore......
This was Hornsby last show as an 'official' member of GD.

Subject: Alice & The Horn
I believe it was just Wizard Of Oz samples during Space, and following the encore (likely not included here), though it's possible I missed something in the 13 years since then. They also played snippets of Wizard Of Oz after the Buckeye Lake show that summer, so it may have been a tour-ending novelty or something like that.
The locomotive horn made its first appearance on the last night of the Nassau run.
Owsley was at this show, generally looking strange and casting disparaging glances at those of us in the taping section. In hindsight he was probably amused that we wasted our time taping, in light of the many informative technical notes he provided in the most recent Dick's Picks.
Pretty nice, upfront and full sound on this source. I'd give it 5 stars if not for the cassette gen.

If you're a fan of "Foolish Heart," (and why not be?), this is a great one. I love the way Garcia and Hornsby team up at the begining, and the outro is just excellent.

Subject: Stuck in the Middle?
I'm not positive, but it appears that enchore is "The Weight" and for some reason is positioned incorrectly on the list. Seems strange to have a song like that pop up randomly in the second set.
Sound quality is nice and crisp.

Not an 'on fire'last show of the spring tour but it was Hornsby's last show as a member of the GD. Must of been some talk back stage because he takes this show. I was there and Jerry and Bruce had a lot of glimpses back and forth they were definitely playing of one another. Hornsby makes 92 soundboards worth the download. Missing Encore.
