Take Me To The River
I was there. Wasn't terrible. Cassidy was good.
I'm a fan of TMTTR and am wondering what that tune would have been like if brought into rotation in the late 80s/early 90s...

This was G's Farewell
I was there both nights and the house lights on the 5th were insulting, but THIS night with that Unbroken Chain and the Gospel-like He's Gone was Sweet. But that Stella Blue seemed very much Garcia telling us how GOOD this could be - all the trouble from the tour melted away - as G lays it out repeating the line Oh Stella Blue some 22 times at the end. He knows he's cashing in. And that's OK. I wished the Band would retire the tune with that heartfelt if exhausted performance. Moved me that night and I've never forgotten it.

Make 'em shine
I can't believe people complain about how fast Stella Blue is at this show. It's a ballad, not a Wagner opera. This is exactly the same tempo as on the Wake of the Flood album. Any slower and the sun might supernova before the song ends.

But for Samba in the Rain....
and notwithstanding Take Me To The River [sorry, Bobby, but that one just doesn't fit your vocal stylings] would have been a stellar song selection for the 90's. I've only listened through the Eyes, but think it sounds pretty good. Jerry's guitar actually sounds crips instead of having that tinny sound of so many fall '94 through summer '95 shows. Will listen to the rest after a meeting that should bore the bejesus out of me [work sux, that's why they call it work], but if the energy carries through, definitely one of the better '95 shows and one that sounds like it could have been from earlier in the 90's. Especially Cassidy and even Big River.
As is my usual, not rating it b/c I wasn't there. But, this is one I will listen to again. And for more than the Big Boss Man and the last Stella Blue. R.I.P. Jerry. Can't believe it's been almost 17 years since we lost you and just over 17 years since I lost my mom.

Pleasantly Surprised
With 1995 getting such a bad rap, especially the Summer shows, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. The first set is indeed fairly nondescript, except for a nice rendition of "Take Me to the River." (Prior to hearing this show, I didn't even know that the GD covered that one). The second set is definitely worth your time though. The highlights for me being a nice "Truckin" (even if Jerry does seem lost at times) and a great "Stella Blue." The slightly sped-up version and the extra layers they're putting on this version really make it a standout.
All in all, a nice addition to any colletion.

My one and only...
This was the only Grateful Dead show I ever had the chance to see. I was 16 yrs old and working at the summer camp I'd gone to as a child, and this was the session break weekend. I came up to St Louis from black river area in southern Missouri to see a band I had just begun to love in the last year or so. I was pretty amazed at the whole scene and to finally see Jerry (my folks would not let me go the prior year). Anyway, I've obviously listened to better shows, but this was my one. Eyes, Cassidy, Stella and BEW were the ones I remember enjoying the most.
Never would have thought the train would've ended so soon after I got on...

Running on fumes

Yes, there was little left in the tank by the time the boys of summer got to St. Louis for this 2 show Riverport run. But the GD pulls out a show that is stellar for '95. Although 7/6/95 has to be a Top 5 show for the year, I realize it's average or mediocre compared to the true Goliath shows of their past. Listening to this show is like putting on that old, stained, beat up pair of sneakers in the back of your closet: They may smell funny, and they're not as nice as when you bought them, but they still fit like a glove and allow you to move and groove.
This SBD is the best recording of this show I've ever heard, so it gets the 5. Plus all the sentimental reasons I can attach to my last ever show. CâÂÂmon, put an asterisk next to just about every song in this set as being JerryâÂÂs last ever version of many all time great tunes, and it makes you feel even better.
Set I: Mississippi Half Step has a few shaky moments courtesy of Mumbles Garcia, but picks up steam and leaves us satisfied. IâÂÂd seen the Take Me To The River in Pitt- this version beats it by a hair. Tight drums throughout. Big Boss Man is a good novelty songâÂÂmy first and last version. Wish it were more rocked out, but beggars canâÂÂt be choosers, eh? Me & My Uncle*-> Big River* is standard Bobby cowboy acoustic fare, with a nod to the locals in the lyrics. Brown Eyed Women is the true set highlight, with Jerry rocking as hard as he did the whole tour. When MTV played back clips after JG passed, they chose this version of this song to play. Let it rip, Fat Man! WhoâÂÂs got the videos of thisâÂÂdrop me a line at beb252 @ hotmail dot com. Anecdote time: Found myself standing next to the taperâÂÂs section for Set I. Met a dude who turned me on to a small, dusty bag of kind fungi in exchange for a bowl of the kind, which IâÂÂd just obtained in the parking lot in a complex 3 way trade that enabled another Head to score a pavilion ticket. As the band tuned up after B-E W, I totally called Cassidy to my new friend. He says, âÂÂHey, thatâÂÂs the name of my dog!â He continued to explain that Cassidy had died recently and how he missed him. Of course they whipped out a solid Cassidy, and my new buddy was laughing and crying with joy. Only at a Dead show. What a way to end the set!
By the start of Set II, I had wandered back up the lawn to a not so crowded patch of grass over on JerryâÂÂs side. Great move in retrospect. They started into Eyes and I started dancing like a dervish. People knock this version, but I found it thouroughly enjoyable. Planes circling the venue seemed to move in harmony with the music coursing through the lawn that beautiful night. Next came my first ever Unbroken Chain, which still sends shivers down my spine. Jerry sounds a littlle out of it, but Vince and Phil ensure that they boys keep to the structure of the song. ***Now itâÂÂs exactly 11 years later to the day, and IâÂÂm off to see Phil & Friends. Still unbroken!*** Samba In The Rain was solid. CanâÂÂt knock Vince for this effort. Then the last ever Truckin' came rollin down the pike, segueing into a smooth He's Gone with great harmonies and solid playing. This final pairing of these legendary tunes just melts in your mind. Got stubbed down to the pavilion for Drums>Space>The Last Time, which came charging out of the depths of the void into our souls. Many have writen eloquently on this last ever Stella Blue- how sweet it was! Like a many faceted gem glistening just one more time. For those complaining about the tempo, compare this version to 6/5/93. Then we coasted through a jazzy Around & Around and competent Liberty encore. Gone are the days indeed, friendsâ¦This is how I want to remember them, not the horrible sounds at Highgate, Giants or SoldierâÂÂs Field, or the chaos and tragedy at RFK and Deer Creek.

Strange Schitzophrenic Show
Some nice moments, Missippi 1/2 Step is good enough. But the strangest is the Stella Blue played at twice its normal speed. I couldn't tell if I liked it or not, but decided I did not. Jerry once said that Stella Blue, when played right, has a perfect moment of silence. Not in this version, which is either intentionally being altered for a different sort of impact, or, more likely, being rushed so that Jer could get back to the hotel.

Gaps between tracks = boo!!!
The overall quality of the sbd is decent, albeit with the usual flattened mix of post-Healy shows. Performance is solid by summer 1995 standards,
i.e. below average overall but still enjoyable if you're not expecting too much. The split-second dropouts at the track boundaries are a major flaw in this recording.

Not too bad
They turned off the House lights at least. Was on the lawn for this one, nice night. OK but short first set with a rare Big Boss Man. Nice Cassidy to end the set. I remember really liking the Eyes (even though Jerry misses some bars) with the sun setting behind us and dusk fast approaching and an Unbroken. Otherwise average 95 show
overall a 2.75
