A so-so comedy which lapses into mediocre romance movie. Watch it if you want to know who Fifi D'Orsay was - you'll find that her winning attributes are her cuteness and pluckiness - she couldn't act and she's a mediocre dancer and singe. The other principles are acceptable stock characters - Astrid Allwyn is Fifi's friend, until she gets bitter about her lack of success; Edwin Maxwell plays his usual gruff, cigar-chomping role. Paul Kelly is the worst as Fifi's love interest - why she immediately falls for him is a mystery which will never be solved. And, there's a lot of stock footage - 5 minutes of "The Calgary Stampede" parade and a minute of bronco-busting before the film starts - and lots of footage of chorus girls from unknown shows.

Fifi D'Orsay played the same bubbly character in all of her movies. Although she was sometimes billed as French, she was born in Montreal.
Her upbeat personality and cheerfulness keep an otherwise tedious film entertaining.

Low-budget film heavy on stock footage. Oddly watchable though. The stock footage at the start is particularly interesting.

Somewhat of a embarassing attempt to make a two bit singer a star, Girl From Calgary is probably more known for it's title (since I'm a Calgarian) than anything else. Fifi D'Orsay stars as a french girl struggling to Make It Big in Calgary of all places, soon, someone discovers her and she's shipped off to broadway, leaving all she loved behind! Will she reconcile with everyone? Fifi can't act, sing or dance, but she does. All three.

This is a generally enjoyable little film, with a fair amount of humour, an engaging story, and some nice songs. There aren't that many songs in fact, this isn't a musical in the sense that the characters spontaneously burst into song: the only songs are by Fifa (the girl of the title), who is a singer.
There are some oddities in the production at times, which may be just editing/recording glitches, I don't know. Also, it take a while for the story to actually start, as there is an extended parade sequence, presumedly with stock footage, which I also assume is used in a number of other places. However, these don't distract too much from the film, and probably reflect the age of the film (it's from 1932).
Overall, this is a rather entertaining film, well worth a watch,
