This is the reason that I look forward to Wednesday nights more than
weekends. You just never can tell what sort of musical adventures
you're going to see when you come to the Cabooze. The Hobo Nephews of
Uncle Frank opened up the show tonight, featuring Ian and Teague Alexy
on guitars. For the last tune of their set, Jimmy and Jason came up
to join them with Jason picking on his acoustic guitar. They sounded
really great, and I hope we get to see more of them on the opener
docket soon.

GJ kicked things off with On The Run, a high energy opener. Mobile
was solid, always a favorite. Savannah had Kevin on the sax really
adding some nice lines. Naïve Melody is always a fun song to bounce
along to. Pace featured Ben from the merch booth on drums, and I've
got to say that I was really impressed. It's not an easy song to keep
up with, but Ben was as tight as could be. And in the jam, he steered
it along nicely, even ending up at a point where they could have
slipped into Simple fairly easily. The first set ended with a big fat
Triscuit that had a cool Kashmir jam later on (there's your Zep tease,
Jen!).

The second set proved why these guys don't get stale even though we
get to see them play every week. Their catalog is deep enough that
they can pull out something like Tazer every now and then and really
surprise you with it. And then they followed it up with Love Is Alive
featuring Kevin on the sax again. Ian Alexy got up and played some
guitar on Loving Cup, and it was cool to see the dueling arch top
Epiphones working that jam into a frenzy. Slippery People is always a
riot, another favorite Talking Heads song of mine. Tim really worked
the intro to Brainwashed well before it closed out the set with
another great jam. There was a real quick encore break, and at 1:30
sharp they came back for Half Past One – how apropos!

It's always fun at the Cabooze, and I loved seeing the patio bar open
again! The new bulletins at the door are pretty cool, too. It sounds
like GJ is going to play their first outdoor show of the season on
Saturday in Eau Claire before a headlining show at the Stone's Throw,
so head on over there and represent. Hopefully the weather will hold
out for them!
