Subject: First time
first time seeing the Gourds for me and I was impressed. I had only heard of their kooky cover of 'Gin and Juice' but I knew they had to have a good song list and they do. The tour manager guy was telling me they have over 250 original songs. I really liked the first song (god's song) with the solo acapella-type style it was sung. it had my attention right off the bat. good job Gourds

Subject: best thing I've heard in awhile
gourds always play downstairs at this venue, but got stuck upstairs this time for some reason. lots of tables up there and no space for people to dance. never a good sign. regardless, the band was solid all night, especially in front of a sit-down audience. show didn't really begin to gel until “lament”, which was a really cool mellow version...particularly on the 3 part harmonies where they back off quite a bit. “flavor” was also very good. “blanket show” was probably my favorite all night, I think b/c jimmy is finding his phrasing on this new one now and it's really turning into a great live song. “pine island bayou” was very hot, but that's not saying much. oh, and the full harmonies coming back into “all in the pack” after the break were sick. I sometimes forget these guys can actually sing like that. the fleetwood mac encore was essentially wasted on this crowd, b/c it was pretty hot and nobody responded. the “pushed her down” was at an unusual pace. initially, I thought they were doing some kind of sped up reprise of “the cold bed”, but it turned into “pushed her down” instead. kev said after that show that he sprung it on the band, which might explain why claude was laughing at one point as he was trying to bend his mind into singing it the new way. my favorite part of the show came after “blanket show” when a guy in the audience yelled out "why aren't you downstairs, what the fuck?". it was truly funny. jimmy sang his ramones song in return. the only thing I actually like about the upstairs is that it makes for a better audience recording, and craig did a great job with this one. crystal clear and no real yahoos in the crowd screwing it up. thanks for taping and posting, craig. best thing I've heard in awhile.

Notes

* a cappella
** unusual arrangement
