Dragnet Meets W.C. Fields
Dragnet's Jack Webb's trademark deadpan voice is used effectively to narrate this period piece. In the finale, we discover one soldier's true motive for fighting in jungles so far from home:
"These men prove everyday they understand the why of Vietnam. Listen to a few letters written home by these young men, some of whom have since been killed: 'Its a lousy war - as is any war...But I'd rather be here than in Minnesota'".
Of course, the letter is probably as bogus as the cheesy sound effects. But that makes it all the more funny: to think that some writer actually managed to slip that joke into this propaganda piece and no one in the layers of military review caught it! Maybe they dozed off?
A 3-star production that I rated 4-stars, just for Webb's voice.
