January, February, March 1966 in Vietnam
Bong Son Area - 25th Inf artillery is shown in support of Operation Masher and the 1st Air Cav. February 2, 1966 more Air Cav troops are deployed. It is now known as Operation White Wing. Patrols are shown. Helicopters resupply and the troops dig in for the night. Another search and destroy operation, Operation Quick Kick IV February 3-5, 1966 by the 1st Inf, is also featured. Three soldiers are wounded by a trip wire mine and are carried. Enemy tunnels are found with provisions.
Tuy Hoa - 101st Airborne continue Operation Harrison during March 7 and 8, 1966. Howitzer & mortar barrage is shown. A number of VC surrender. Gen. Willard Pearson is briefed on the progress. At this time, Robert Mitchum visits the 101st Airborne troops - ordinance is demonstrated and he fires a M-79 grenade launcher. He departs on a helicopter.
Ban Drang - 25th inf convoy to Ban Drang on March 7, 1966 for Operation Garfield. They build their new base. Perimeter defense troops are wounded by enemy snipers. The Tropic Lightning troops deploy via helicopters for search & destroy missions. They find a VC tree stand with rice.
Tan Bihn - February 26, 1966 Operation Eagle Flight helicopters deliver 172d Airborne Brigade, who are involved in a search & destroy mission. Soldiers hit by Viet Cong snipers are med-evaced.
Duc Co Nha Trang - 5th Special Forces February 15 -22, 1966. The HQ supplies remote Special Forces "A" camps in enemy territory all over South Vietnam. A three month supply of fresh meat (live beeves on the hoof) and vegetables are loaded onto a C-130. A truck is air-dropped from a C-130 and the perimeter defense of an "A" camp is shown.
The Montengard tribesman on base can build a house in 1 day. The Montengard special forces "strikers" are shown deploying for patrols in the area; an IED is found and destroyed.
Saigon - March 7th, 1966 an 25th Inf Div armored unit arrives in the Port of Saigon from Hawaii under Operation Moonlight. Tanks are debarked from LST 1158. The convoy heads for Cu Chi and the 25th Inf Div base.
Bien Hoa - February 26, 1966 a howitzer is operated
Fort Gulick, Canal Zone - introductory Halo (high altitude low opening) Equipment training by Special Forces parachute instructors. The 5-week training took place in February and March 1966. Various aspects of training, including practice jumps from 14,000 feet are shown.
Panmunjom, Korea - February 14, 1966 the UN arrives because of complaint from North Korea that they have fired upon a policeman. 10 days later the North Koreans are told their accusations are false. At Knight Field, on February 23, 1966 an honor ceremony is held by the 8th Army holds an Honor Guard ceremony with multinational troops.
Garmisch, Germany - the US Army competes in the World Biathlon on February 14th and 16th, 1966. Norway sweeps the field.
