The studio album recorded by God Street Wine in the spring of 1997 was the band's second for Mercury Records. Produced by Bill Wray and engineered by longtime GSW collaborator Malcolm Springer, this CD found the band reaching for a rootsy rock sound influenced by recent tours with the Black Crowes and the Allman Brothers. The album was recorded in various studios in midtown Manhattan (where God Street got their start back in the late 80s) especially the wonderful Sear Sound, where the basic tracks were recorded. In addition to the regular five members, Bill Payne of Little Feat sat in on keyboards, and Denny Fongheiser played percussion as well as drums on three tracks.
These outtakes fall in various categories. Some are original tracks that did not make the final album: "Flame" and "Baby Brother." An interesting, slow version of "Pretty Song" with bassist Dan Pifer on lead vocal. There are also oddities like a cover of Grams Parsons' "Hot Burrito #2", recorded so the band could "get in the mood" for the mellow "Don't Speak of These Things." A few improvised jams round out the package, including one that clocks in at almost a half-hour long and cycles through a half-dozen keys and grooves.
These outtakes are almost all from the basic tracking part of the process, and survive because of the diligence of the excellent Sear Sound assistant engineers. Of course little thought was given to the mix quality, and since the vocals were there mostly for cue purposes, they are low in the mix and sometimes missing lines or whole verses (the exception is "Silver", whose tracking vocal mostly survived into the final mix).
All tunes were captured from the DAT tape archive by Lo Faber and uploaded to archive.org in 2009; no compression, eq or other treatment has been applied, although it arguably should have been.
