Subject: Underrated
I don't understand the negative reviews of this ad. It's sugar-sweet and very warm'n'fuzzy.

did you see the huge dollop of mayo the new mom put on her food? it's not like cool-whip! and who sets the table for a big buffet dinner like that with a fat ole jar of mayo on the table? no other condiments are there.

ok the last post in here was about the great grandmother thing. the jingle says and great grandmother knows or somethin, so yeah its talkin about the baby and it being her great grandmother....whats the point of that post?
i do think though that for all them people there no one seemed to touch that bird, as you see when the mother says thanks that was great, the whole bird is still on the table....theres starving people out there you know who would love to have some of taht bird!...well maybe not without the hellmans. :)

New parents bring home a new baby. Great Grandma (according to the truly annoying jingle) prepares all the food for the welcome celebrations. At the end, .new Mom says, áðThanks Grandma!áñ OH1 ok, so that would make her HER grandma, and the baby the GREAT Grandmother. So much for my snarky comment.

This 30 second spot for Hellman's Mayonnaise begs the question: Did Grandmother forget to baste the turkey? Forgetting to do that would render the bird 'dry' and unmanageable. The only viable solution? Make sandwichs! Let's not forget to slather on lots of mayo to help make the turkey moist and greasy! Hey, no holiday table is complete without a jar of hearty mayonnaise!

Treacly commercial for Hellman's Mayonnaise (aka Best Foods west of the Rockies) from c. 1980. As with some many food commercials of the period, and especially those that come out around Thanksgiving, the emphasis is how Product X can help bring about unity at family gatherings and maintain traditions. How mayonnaise in particular can do that is unclear. I suppose you're suppose to glob into grandma's terrible cooking, or something.
