This is a true classic; and Payne [Compayré's translator] is to be as much commended too. The prose is elegant; Compayré's judgments passed with great acuity and equal fairness. One marvels at the sheer scope of a document of this rich detail produced long before the facility of our Internet Age; an Age which indeed puts his classic at our fingertips. Herein lies a feast of knowledge on pedagogy. Payne went on to be President of Vanderbuilt's Peabody; and a library is to this day deservedly in his name there in Nashville.
Compayré directly informed all the turn-of-century Pedagogues; and documented all the greats in separate volumes to this massive work.
The compression of knowledge on the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Chinese and Cemmenius (once a contender to be Harvard's president [1641], progenitor of Sweden's education system [he was Moravian] and creator of Orbis Pictus the first children's book per se) are all surveyed ... before Compayré's great countrymen of the French Enlightenment; and thence to the moderns. A timeless work, in a word.
At once time this History was on the Index of Rome; but hotly read nevertheless in the common rooms of all French schools.
