Subject: Hammer at its Peak
I had the opportunity to see this film in 1959 when I was 8 years old at my local theater. This was my first exposure to a Hammer film, and I was hooked. Peter Cushing portrayal of Holmes was more manic and impatient than Basil Rathbone. Andre Morell's Dr. Watson, though, never quite seems to bond with Cushing as well as Rathbone and Nigel Bruce did in the same roles. Morell's Watson, while closer in character to Conan Doyle's original conception comes off as a little stiff.

Of course, as usual, Hammer took some liberties and added material not present or different in the novel, but this still remains great viewing and must-see for any Holmes fan. Hammer had plans to make several films with Cushing as Holmes, but because of poor box-office compared to their horror films, the project was shelved. A pity.

Cushing would go on to play Holmes again in 1968 for a series filmed by the BBC for televion, including yet another version of "Hound."

Cushing's last appearance as Holmes was in the 1984 made for tv movie, "The Masks of Death", where-in an older and retired Holmes is once more pressed into service by Scotland Yard to solve a mystery.

One interesting note of this film is Christopher Lee in a rare romantic lead. Lee himself would go on to play Holmes also in several films.

Subject: not up to IA quality
I have downloaded Hound of theaskervilles twice on MPEG one format and I am not impressed. It has alot of green spaces and splotches running through the 2 minutes and some seconds of it. You want to impress me? Get a better quality trailer and the film.

Of all the 'Hound...' movies, this one is my fave. I just love Hammer movies, but mostly I just love Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Legends!
