LibriVox's public domain recording of H.G. Well's The Invisible Man.
The Invisible Man (1897) is one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time. Written by H.G. Wells (1866-1946), it tells the story of a scientist who discovers the secret of invisibility and uses it on himself. The story begins as the Invisible Man, with a bandaged face and a heavy coat and gloves, takes a train to lodge in a country inn whilst he tries to discover the antidote and make himself visible again. The book inspired several films and is notable for its vivid descriptions of the invisible man--no mean feat, given that you can't see him! (Summary by Alex Foster)

If I could give birth to invisible science experiments, as now seem likely to bewilder and behex, I would want it all to follow the narrative of H. G. Wells....
Although a good dunking of Stan Lee would ALSO be divine.

A wonderful way to listen knowing your dreams of all the past readings in one's life brought back to the memory by an illustrated, author.such as H.G. Wells is sublime creative genius. Every chapter takes an individual journey to one more picture the listener carefully identifies from the words of a classic tale. Each time the story tells of an encounter in meta-fiction writing, the urge to see a clearer picture of what the book creates in the imagination of an artist without instruction is obvious to many. It is no wonder why these words have contributed to so many creative acts.Headphones on, body relaxed, and glasses off. A delightful way to spend an afternoon. Thank you, kindly for sharing.

One feels that Mr Foster is a character in the story, as real as the Invisible Man...as though Griffin himself were telling the story in third person, making subtle allowances for his sudden and lethal addiction to power. He implies more regret over not mastering his temper than about misusing his genius. A very nuanced narration.

Fabulous narration of one of the most brilliant stories ever penned by H.G.Wells.
Mr Foster is an excellent reader. The pace is just right, and his emotive performance of the tale is, in my opinion, perfect. The slight buzzing sound which is barely audible in some places didn't annoy me, nor did I find it a distraction.
I do hope Mr Foster will be narrating even more stories on Libravox, as the quality of his work is superb.
Now, if he would only consent to undertake a solo narration of 20,000 leagues under the sea.......;)

A brilliant display and reading, voices authentic,of how different classes in England really would do in a situation like this.In that era.
I think it could be a demonstration of many things to compare.
Good for a youngster or an adult.

Just wanted to publicly acknowledge Alex Foster for his incredible reading of H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man at http://librivox.org/invisible-man-by-h-g-wells/
The voices, rhythm, speed volume, pitch and recording are all fantastic. I did contact him privately last year, but he is still one of the best I have ever hear.
Thank you!

Power corrupts, and the invisible man is no exception. Experimenting on himself, he succeeds in making himself invisible. Now, he is free to do whatever he wants, take what he wants, hurt who he wants. How can the average man fight against something he can't see?
Personally, I felt sorry for the guy. At the same time, I can relate to Kent's decision. But I won't give anymore away. :-)
I will say I also noticed the buzzing in the background on these recordings. I was able to filter it out with the GE so that the recording was listenable.

I had forgotten how much I wanted to empathize with the Invisible Man and how impossible it is. In this day, we are regularly presented with misunderstood monsters & villains-- it seems fresh to encounter one who is a not completely a flat character yet is far from warm and fuzzy.
Four stars for story and 5 stars for the reader-- he's excellent.

Update:
Listened again a year later from my comments above... this time I was struck by the dry humor & it's presentation by Alex Foster. Upped my rating from 4 stars to 5.

Great reading! I especially liked the rustic characterisations. Nice comic touches.
Captures the unbalanced intensity of Griffin well.

I agree with the previous reviewer. The story is eerily good, with a hard-to-like main character. Wow, he's mean!
The reading is wonderful.
My biggest beef is that there is a background noise through almost all of the sections. Also, the section/chapters aren't stated at the very beginning of the recording, and the title tags are so long that it takes a long time to display which chapter I'm on when listening on my MP3 player. (These are all nit-pick technicalities that LibriVox has since changed, but this was recorded before those changes.)
It's definitely a worthwhile listen, despite the nit-picks.
