Major General Sir William Sleeman was British Resident at the Court of Lucknow. He wrote this diary as an official account of his tour through the Kingdom of Oudh. Two years following the tour, official permission was given for the public publication of the diary and correspondence.
The account contains information on the climate, crops grown, the organisation of village life, local difficulties and wars etc.
Both books are freely available to download from the ‘Project Gutenberg’ website.

Oude or Avadh lies in today's Uttar Pradesh In India. In 1902 AD it was United Provinces of Agra and Avadh. In 1937 AD it was renamed as United Provinces. After independence, in January 12, 1950, it got its present name of Uttar Pradesh.
Having a colorful history featuring annexation by the British of the Princely state of Avadh numerous battles and skirmishes between the rulers of Avadh and the British Infantry( East India Co.) have been fought all chronicled in the above book.
