First of two warm-up shows for Langford's April tour with Ship & Pilot, as well as a release party for his new CD "Gold Brick." I'd never heard of the Bowery Poetry Club before this, but it turned out to be a pleasant little space right across the street from CBGB's, with maybe 40-50 folding chairs and a surprisingly excellent sound system.
Both Jon and Tony were recovering from the flu, but were nonetheless in fine form, and Jean Cook is as good as I've ever heard her here, more than picking up any slack in energy with vicious violin chops and gorgeous backing vocals. Special bonus audio celebrity-spotting tip: Listen for Garland Jeffries making quips from the audience in the left channel.
The band: Jon Langford (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, vocals), Jean Cook (violin, vocals), Tony Maimone (bass), Steve Goulding (drums).
