This is a one-camera documentation of a full speech of John Kerry at San Jose State University in San Jose, California on June 24, 2004. It was at this event that Lee Iacocca made an official endorsement of John Kerry for president of the United States of America.
This program begins with a speech by Lee Iacocca, who discusses his career at Ford and Chrysler, as well as his prominent role in the Statue of Liberty restoration project. Mr. Iacocca acknowledges his previous support for President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President W. Bush, whom he actually campaigned for in 2000. After coming to the conclusion that America is on the wrong course with the Bush administration, Lee Iacocca decided to endorse presidential candidate John Kerry.
The focus of John Kerrys speech and Lee Iacoccas eloquent introduction is business and technology. Kerry discusses the need to create a good economy through the encouragement of innovation and research, with specific remarks related to the subjects of health care, clean energy, and outsourcing.
Broadband technology is a major theme of this speech, as Kerry proposes a greater expansion of such services to boost economic opportunities in rural communities
The subject of stem-cell research is also brought up, as John Kerry discusses the need to allow a higher level of scientific research in the United States of America. As Lee Iacocca explains in his introduction, diabetes research, a topic very close to his heart, is indeed on the verge of a major breakthrough, and the advancement of stem-cell research will enhance such efforts.
As explained in this program, America needs a good C.E.O. to oversee the task of governing America. Certain government projects in the past have benefited businesses, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and National Science Foundation (NSF), which led to the creation of the internet. John Kerry proposes to exempt capital gains taxes for start-up companies, and to encourage new technology within America.
While not specifically discussing the war in Iraq, Kerry receives a standing ovation for announcing that he will not send young soldiers to fight wars for oil-related reasons.
Acknowledging San Jose aka the Silicon Valley, John Kerry also mentions that he spent some time in the SF Bay Area while he was stationed at Treasure Island during his military service. John Kerry admits that he was one of the people that visited the Filmore West of San Francisco in 1967, and actually retained some memories, unlike others that attended concerts at this particular venue.
