Have been watching The East Side Kids, Dead End Kids, Bowery Boys, since I was a little guy many years ago. They were always entertaining and fun to watch. As for the WWII comment, if you were not around then or shortly after than you don't know what it's all about. Sorry that today we don't have this type of entertainment. These were real people. Leo was the plumbers helper who became an East Side Kid. Poor Billy H.

Even though they are way before my time, I have always loved these Dead end east side Bowery Boys.
Bobby Jordan was such a hottie. Nothing done today comes even close to this great Gang..yes some were kind of Cornie..but clean and films you would not be embarrassed to see with the family..but today's family loves blood and guts..so why waste the time.
God Bless the Gang !!!

Subject: Second Best "Bowery Boys" / "Dead End Kids" I've Seen
Let's get something straight right from the start. This is not a propaganda movie for WWII as a previous perhaps bitter reviewer claimed. Sure the war was integrated into the plot but for crying out loud it was 1943! This was more of a coming of age movie for the b-boys. I liked this movie because it moved fast and was consistent along the way. Also, it was touching to see the mugs grow up and actually take responsibility for their destinies.
I was incredibly impressed with the treatment of the black actors... only lightly stereotyped in an era where movies all around this one showed blacks (deplorably) as dim witted servants and the like. By today's standards even I think the roles would largely hold up if taken in context. Same for Mugsy's sister whom I felt was portrayed as intelligent and an independent thinker (who not once fainted or crumpled into a sobbing helpless ball of tears, how refreshing in 1943). Also the same for the FEMALE JUDGE in the courtroom scene.
I wonder if the movie's producers made these wonderful, not so subtle egalitarian moves intentionally, perhaps even in the spirit of showing that America was certainly not as racist / fascist as was Nazi Germany? I think this merits further research.
My favorite Dead End Kids film is "Angels With Dirty Faces" with James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. Let me say I've seen some real stinkers with the b-boys/Dead End Kids which makes this film even more of a treasure. I look forward to sharing this film with fellow classic film buffs. Five stars for the brave use of females and blacks in pioneering roles.
Go America! Call me corny but this film reminds me of why I love my country, the USA, so much.

I disliked this one immensely. It's basically a war propaganda movie, and it watches like one great big ad for WWII. I felt the propaganda was the film and the story was built in around it as an afterthought. If you want to watch a typical East side kids film, don't watch this one. By the end of it I was wishing Muggs would get hit by a truck. It is interesting as piece of cinematic/WWII propaganda history, but if you want an enjoyable comedy, don't pick this one.

In dis movie dey are not the Bowery Boys. Dey started as the Dead End Kids with dair first movie, Dead End in 1937 with Humphrey Bogart. In 1940 Warner Bros. dropped dem and they went to another studio and became da East Side Kids until the late 1940's. Dey den became the Bowery Boys after another studio switch.

Well, I've never bored you guys with my expertise about the boys, so here goes.
The Dead End Kids were five actors and one plumber's assistant from New York who appeared in Dead End on Broadway. They then went to Hollywood when they filmed the play, and remained until 1958.
The original kids from the play were Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Huntz Hall, Charles Duncan, Bernard Punsly and Gabriel Dell. Duncan was replaced by Leo B. Gorcey. Gorcey later became Muggs in Monogram's East Side Kids and as Slip with Allied Studios The Bowery Boys.
Following Dead End, the kids ended up at Warner Bros. where they made the best films, Angels With Dirty Faces, and They Made Me A Criminal. The group also worked at Universal between 1938-1943.
After being movie stars one became a lawyer (I forget which), Leo Punsly a doctor, Barlett an insurance agent, Benedict and Hall stayed in pictures, Koenig a high school principal, Grippo an entertainment agent and magician.
Oddly, they all had run ins with the police because of their reputation as toughs from the movies.
Huntz Hall was the last to die in 2004.
You might know Leo Gorcey and Leo B. Gorcey were father and son.
Obviously, I love these guys.
So please watch them and rate them high.
They were all child actors who did well and had a lot of fun doing it.

Well, to be honest with you, I was expected to flip this one off as another boring Bowery Boys vehicle. But while watching this, I became quite enchanted with everything that was going on!
Mugs (Leo Gorcey) is all set to become the amateur boxing champion. When a mafia fix of the event makes him miss the fight, Danny (Bobby Jordan) takes his place, and much to the disgust of the mafioso, wins! This puts Mugs in a bit of a jealous fix as he thinks Danny fixed the fight so that Mugs would be not able to compete just so he could win it.
The jealousy bug continues as they enter a jitterbug contest, and even though Mugs win, his partner is soon found out to be a professional dancer, and they are disqualified. Mugs is incensed, more so when Danny gets the prize instead!
The movie reaches it's final zenith when Mugs finds out that Danny is joining another gang! Who? Why that little dirty double-crosser!
Laugh all you want, but I found this movie touching, with the relationship between Bobby and Muggs especially. Bobby Jordan is especially good in this, you can feel he's totally growing out of gang life and becoming a man of his own (at least for this movie he was back for more in 4 other Bowery Movies that same year LOL). And Leo Gorcey!!!??! Who knew that guy was so talented?!? His dancing skills are so great here.
All in all a real surprise!
