Deborah Weston is seriously considering going to New York, and needs a suitable gown to wear there. She gives a detailed account of the local "notice battle," that is to say the struggle to get the local clergy to read notices of anti-slavery meetings. Deborah comments: "The temperance people are trying to get up as efficient an organization as ours." She retells an amusing anecdote told by Dr. Jewitt, "the temperance man," in a lecture
