In a note on the inner flap of the envelope, Pillsbury states that "the speaker is elected at last" and "poor, poor Kansas!"
May's writing on the envelope reads, "Rec'd March 10, 1856. Ans'd [March] 11 [1856]."

Pillsbury says that Maria Webb of Dublin has written "a letter of eight pages, a sort of Epistle General, ...and they let it creep about in the darkness after me to weaken my influence..." He sends letters from Joseph Barker, Eliza Wigham and others. Says the struggle with Julia Griffiths is hard on his English friends. He attacks Louis Alexis Chamerovzow
