Maria Weston Chapman tells about visiting Mrs. Gaskell. She thinks the English are taught to keep a conversation going by asking questions. She had to describe the mobbing of the abolitionists in detail. Chapman went from the Gaskells to the Luptons. Harriet Lupton has been ill. Chapman tells about her travels through England. She mentions Mrs. Henry Turner of Lentonfield, who described a visit by Ralph Waldo Emerson. She tells about Wilson Armistead packing a box for the anti-slavery fair. Chapman writes: "Ask Laugel [Elizabeth Bates Chapman's husband] to enquire the price of musical boxes-- ...I should like to get one for Harriet."
