May discusses the nomination of James Buchanan by the Democrats. He says that the pro-slavery Know Nothing Party nominated Millard Fillmore and that Colonel John Charles Frémont is the Republican candidate. May tells of the northern reaction to the "Sack of Lawrence." He says that men and money are being raised to recover Kansas from the slaveholders and that there is great sympathy in the North for Charles Sumner. May regrets that the material he sent Steinthal about the American Unitarian Association did not arrive in time for the London meetings. He tells about Reverend John Gorham Palfrey and his slaves and mentions "The Inquirer," Mr. Csernátony, Octavius Brooks Frothingham and Moncure Daniel Conway
