Ballou replies to May's letter of February 12, in which he had been asked to lecture on slavery. Ballou declines the offer, citing lack of time due to responsibilities to his parish and editorial work on his paper, "The Practical Christian." Ballou says that he has thought of leaving the ministry to enter reform work, and inquires about the possibilities of renumeration for lecturing. He suggests a friend of his in West Boylston named David R. Lamson as a possible lecturer
