Hunt writes Garrison informing him of an accident befalling his friend, Charles C. Burleigh, who was struck by the "rear truck of the engine" by a passing train while on his way to post a letter. Hunt informs Garrison that the Burleigh family thought it advisable that Garrison and Wendell Phillips be informed, given their relationship with Burleigh, and the medical prognosis having been cited as critical
