William Lloyd Garrison is staying with Thomas Whitson in Christiana, Pennsylvania, on his way to Salem, Ohio. Garrison explains the reason for postponing the lecture in Cortland, N.Y., and requests a change of schedule in Syracuse. Thomas Whitson has a lively appreciation of Samuel Joseph May's moral worth. Garrison comments: "What queer ideas of government infest the brains of Gerrit Smith! And how deluded he is to suppose that he is to roll up a large vote for Governor!"
