Holograph, signed
William Lloyd Garrison gave John Greenleaf Whittier's last letter to Richard Davis Webb, who wanted it as an autograph. Garrison's mental and physical condition has been affected by "a serious kidney complaint." He hesitates to accept Whittier's invitation to lecture in Amesbury on behalf of the freedmen's cause, but he will come. Garrison writes: "I was very glad to see your recommendation of Charles Sumner for Secretary of State under Grant, though it would be impossible to fill his place in the Senate." Garrison was surprised by Wendell Phillips's attacks on President Grant
