Darren LeybourneLayborn - In This I Heard You EP (lp010) (January 17, 2005)

Layborn aka Darren Leybourne has been quietly producing music in Winnipeg, Canada for many years. His sound is a progression of over 4 years of searching for "that sound." In his current state of production he has embraced minimal, ambient and exploritory aspects of tech-house. Every track is created with a conceptual approach and of a deeply personal nature. Which results in Darren having countless productions and very little official releases. Until now.

"In This I Heard You EP" is a glimpse into the conceptual album "Sullen City and the Subconscious Ritual" having constructed the city's sound on the bases of minimal, ambient and explorations of sound in general. This album is still being built.

Subject: inspired.. unique
it's got a familiar feel, but with a personal spin that makes it worth a few listens... i'm still trying to wrap my head around it all the same. either way, it's great to hear other Winnipeggers making engaging music.

the things that i remembered most after the first spin were the subtly shifting beats on 'amended' interspersed with arrythmic bursts, but my favorite track was the title track, which plays it closest to the minimal tech-house template... still, as a whole it's not particularly traditional... nor accessible.. but it's good stuff.

Subject: Minimal Techno Storytelling
Who says you need words to tell a story? Layborn's new release proves just how much you can say without even opening your mouth. "In This I Head You" plays like a story and within it you become lost in its inspring journey. The genre of Minimal Techno is being brought to a whole new level with this piece. With tracks such as "Amended" your soul just swells with its rich ambiance and progression. As a concept album it totally suceeds in drawing you in, and keeping you there much to your will. "In This I Heard You" rises above the rest, and if you "heard" it...you would know.

It is without doubt this is only an early chapter to Layborn's career, and what a fine one it is starting out to be. I can't begin to imagine what comes next...and can't wait. Neither will you.
