Ian D HawgoodTents and Hills (May 25, 2008)

ian d. hawgood is a musician and teacher from tokyo, by way of oxford. essentially deaf until the age of ten, he felt and watched his way through childhood piano lessons. his work is still informed by that reaching, and today his process is focused on holding onto the myriad glimmers of landscape and place. 3-track portable in hand, he collects as many sounds as possible as he travels between london and tokyo.

Subject: until i am blue in the face
i will write and praise this dude until i am blue in the face. four albums in the past month - a record surely? and not one of them bad - in fact, all of them are pretty much great and this is my second favourite (to his new koen park 'nowhere home' release). its a bit too short though and feels like it should be longer - and as for the argument in the other reviews - check his myspace. clearly a bit of a bonkers recluse but heck, if he does that to make music then that's cool. i need the fall quick to hear this work fully - its very brown leaves kind of music. ack, new album next week please?

Hi guys - we're so happy you like Ian's work as much as we do! We're doing our best to make sure everyone knows about this release, but we're a small operation and admittedly our reach is limited. We're really happy you've found us, please spread the word! :-) Best wishes from the luvsound team.

Subject: More?
Another release within 2 days of Urban Holiday? Wow. I knew about his other work and so what if he doesn't advertise his work (although UH had 320 downloads in 2 days and this 50 in one which is very high considering he didn't 'advertise'? Still, what's the point of being experimental and underground if you are going to be boring and promote yourself? People will stumble across this album in particular in years to come (if we still have internet) and wonder how he slipped under the radar. The artwork and whole package really should make other netlabels sit up and take notice.

What I really love about the last two releases is that, yes they are experimental, but its fun and melodic and totally unique. I have NEVER heard music like this before, it really is a sound of his own.

After a long hiatus Hawgood releases another great piece of work. His work just gets better - very droney but you can still hear the instruments, essentially horns, guitars, percussions, strings - maybe even vocals but it is so carefully washed out and bled its hard to tell. The artwork is awesome but as a big fan of his Resting Bell releases its disappointing to see he isn't listing this anywhere, nor Luv Sound for that matter. It seems Hawgood wants to release without a big deal or fuss, when actually a lot more should be done. Fair enough he wants to keep his music secretish, but as a fan it is frustrating that I had to discover this by accident through a random visit today to Luv Sound. People need this music NOW!
