Subject: grateful discovery
There's several competent Dead cover bands out there these days and this band is one of the better ones. I had never heard of these guys until I downloaded this show. What's here is a very well recorded show played with lots of enthusiasm and chops. The Scarlet->Fire is particularly hot, as is the St. Stephen->Eleven. The rhythm section gets a special nod. The bassist plays some major league phat bottom end. Check this show out. It's a good one.

Subject: Wow! I'd almost forgot this show
First of all, the quality of the recording is amazing. Every room we played in had different needs from the soundboard (obviously) and sometimes the soundboard feed would not have enough drums or too much vocals, etc. Maybe because this room was so big... I don't know. It just has everything at the right level. Then the fact that this was a great crowd and extremely receptive to our efforts. It must have inspired us all to really go that extra mile and pull out all the stops.
John's drum solo was amazing. Blazing out of a blistering "Eleven" jam set the pace for one of John's best... I think. I usually skip over drums (even when listening to Dead shows). I find them to be more enjoyable from the audience than "on tape" later. But I couldn't stop this one from running through to completion.
The only bummer about disc 2 is that vocals on "Here Comes Sunshine" and a couple other songs were clipped due to technical problems. This also happens in "Hard To Handle" & "Lovelight". But even with these flaws this is still a gem of a show.

Subject: Discovered review for this show at jambands.com
This show is highly recommended even without the first set. People couldn't get into this gig, it was so crowded (crowd estimate: 800) and the band was on fire that night. Despite the loss of vocal mikes here and there, it is a GREAT show.

REVIEW: 1/22/99 Laughing Water - The Claddagh Pub - Lawrence, MA
by Joe Hacking
I'd never been to the Claddagh before, but I'm told it was once a dive with a tiny stage. This is no longer the case. The Claddagh Pub is now a spacious, well-appointed room, with the tall ceilings, huge dance floor and big stage that allows both band and fan to enjoy a night on the town.
Arriving early allowed us to enjoy some food and a couple of beers before the crowds arrived. While John set up his drum kit, Carrie and I sampled The Claddagh's tasty and cheap fare (only $3.95 for a sandwich and fries!). It is worth noting that they also serve one of the best pints of Guinness you'll find outside of Boston. It's fresh, and they even mark the creamy head with a shamrock.
Even as we finished our meal, we noticed clusters of Heads awaiting the band's arrival. I'd heard the Claddagh was a great place to see Laughing Water through some of the hardcores like Steve Finnigan, and apparently he wasn't the only one who thought so. By the time Mike, Dan, Glenn, Billy and Joe showed up, throngs of Deadheads were milling about, anticipating the start of the show.
After a "Maggie's Farm" sound check, Laughing Water began the set proper at about nine thirty, easing into the beginning of a long evening of music with "Midnight Hour." But what seemed a slow start quickly changed with the opening cord punch of "Shakedown Street." Guitarist Joe Pennacchio had apparently decided to lead the charge this night, and as he picked his way through the disco groove, the audience responded, taking to the dance floor. It would remain filled all evening.
"Same Thing," "Tennessee Jed" slowed it down a bit, yet kept the energy tight. After a quick "Roll Out The Barrel," they picked it up again with a "Me And My Uncle" -> "Big River" that sped along, driven by Joe's plucking and Glenn's keyboard work. As always, "Birdsong" evoked thoughts of Jerry through Joe's guitar and vocals. "Promised Land" and "Top Of The World" capped off the first set with an electric edge.
Dan picked up the electric thread from the first set and plugged it into his guitar with the punchy "Bucket" second set opener, followed by a sparkling "Scarlet -> Fire." Then Mr. Anger himself, John Reddie, took to the mike for LW's first flawless "Mr. Charlie." By now, the audience was revved up with a good buzz on, and "Truckin'" re-ignited them into dance and song. A series of Mike Bombs (nice and fat in the sound mix) descended into an explosive "Other One" -> "St. Stephen" -> "Eleven" that would have made Pigpen grin. John used his "Drumz" segment to bash out any extra demons lurking in his soul, slowing down the hyper-driven Laughing Water for a brief "Space" captained by Joe. "NFA" -> "Sugar Magnolia" pulled the audience back to Earth, and by now, the dance floor was a crowded, beer stained oven, possessing a near mosh pit intensity generated by band and multitudes of dancers. The revelers sang along at top volume.
But between the unseasonably warm weather and the heat generated by the tight room, the temperature in the Claddagh climbed to almost unbearable levels in front of the stage. It took its toll on the band after a time, forcing them to take a quick break to cool down.
"High Heeled Sneakers," opened the brief third set, followed by a "Hard To Handle" with choral accompaniment courtesy of the still-packed dance floor. This outspoken crowd continued to croon to the band, exclaiming as one the lyric "laughing water" during "Here Comes Sunshine." And though the room started to heat up again, it didn't stop the dancers from ripping it up on the wooden floor when the boys went into a smokin' "Lovelight." The band couldn't help but give the largest indoor crowd they've ever played to an encore, choosing "Big Boy Pete" to end a very raucous night in Lawrence at a quarter to two.
This recording is missing set 1, which was not recorded to DAT but still exists on cassette. One of Laughing Water's best sounding shows, if you only download one show this is probably the one to get.
