Subject: Faites vos jeux !
Yes, a lot has been said already about that one.
Great cast indeed, great locations (Venice mostly) the plot is a little weak for sure, characters miss some deeper feelings, and, of course, it is not a film about Mambo dancing.
But it's well filmed the image quality is not so bad and, if you like cinema, the eyes of Silvana Mangano should be a sufficient motivation to see that one.

Subject: Great Film!
Indeed it is a dark film, but that's what I liked about it. But then again my favorite genre is Drama, especially the dark and mysterious kind.

Subject: explorations of honour
An exploration of need and greed, but most of all honour. Very "noir"-ish in its feel, Mambo offers a journey toward understanding the need to belong and how belonging can come when it is least expected. Giovanna comes to see inside her own heart at last, enduring tragedy on the way to finding herself -- and finding it with honour.

Subject: Three times is my limit
for unsuccessfully attempting to download a film. *sighs*
Maybe I'll try to download it from some other source sometime, but, frankly, reading the abusive remarks Cinemad directed toward AppleGirl for having the temerity to express her opinion has probably spoiled my enjoyment of it in any case.
And, who knows? He may even have a point: those of us who consider Jolie an excellent actress may not find as much to enjoy in this film as does He of the Condescending Sneer.

Subject: excellent
One of the best movies I've seen in the Archive.
This is not your usual happily ever after movie. It deals with very deep issues and in a way perhaps most people are unaccustomed to on the silver screen.
Worth seeing.

Subject: Not for Kids
I first saw this atmospheric masterpiece about twenty years ago on cable, when I was still living in The States, and I was lucky enough to make a good VHS copy of it. Unfortunately, several countries, and all these years later, I'd lost that copy and couldn't seem to replace it. Just a few weeks ago, I found it listed in an online catalog and ordered it immediately...only to end up with the seller's VERY poorly done copy of a copy (fraud). Finding MAMBO here, I'm amazed and grateful! So glad, in fact, that the idiotic 'review' near the bottom of the page doesn't manage to rouse more out of me than a sneer of condescension. Shouldn't you go back to your Angelina Jolie flicks, kid?

Subject: la creme de creme
MAMBO - in our humble opinion, la creme de creme of the archive.org film collection thus far we viewed & we have viewed around 50 or so of the 'classic' films from the archive.org feature film group - MAMBO is to one to watch over and over - for sure, one to add to your private collection for keeps.
Directed by Robert Rossen - All the King's Men (1949), The Hustler (1961)
Produced by Dino De Laurentiis - producer of many of Federico Fellini films
If watched with care and a creative mind, the opening credit scenes tell the whole story - one of the top 10 opening 5 minutes of all the 1000s of films under our belt - not far from "A Touch of Evil" quality - a sequence especially for persons inclined to the sensuousness of dance and the human condition.
A Short Synopsis: Silvana Mangano (a very lovely & sexy voiced actress) plays a young, poor Venetian woman, Giovanna Masetti. She is struggling with an difficult life as a shop assistant when one day a young count Enrico sees her in the glass shop where she works. She gets invited to the masquerade ball (ah - if they would have parties like this now - oh wow) with the help of her unscrupulous boyfriend Mario's dirty deal with the count - the glorious evening does not turn out well, not at all. One bright moment to this disastrous evening is Giovanna's meeting up with a troupe of MAMBO dancers in particular the troupe leader, Toni Salerno (Shelley Winters).
The misadventures of the masquerade tip the scale for Giovanna - she finally decides to follow her dream to go to Roma - to become a dancer - her real life from now starts. After serious effort - Giovanna briefly finds fame becoming the star of the group. After a european tour, the group return to Venice - Giovanna's old reality reemerges & her love for Mario burns fresh and hot, but the count, Enrico reenters this twisted 'menage de troi' with an bizarre twist.
Download the film to catch the rest of this fine film - I've told you too much already...
To end the review, we'll finish with Silvana's closing lines: "Perhaps in my third world, the absorbing world of the Mambo, I could find forgetfulness of the past, and in time peace and happiness."
PS (small tech note - this print & the digitizing are excellent - very few errors - good sound - no significant missing sections. we recommend you download the MPEG2 copy if you can. At 3.4 Gb the copy is not smal and will take some time to download, but these larger, high quality copies are the best way to watch this and all the films we have found on the archive.org collection.

Subject: Kind of Dark
Not as many mambo dance scenes as I'd hoped. In fact, not hardly any! A dark little picture, lots of mean, sad stuff happens to this girl. Both guys she's involved with are unappealing. In real life, she'd never give either of them a second glance. Takes place in Italy, so maybe something was lost in the translation. The film is quite disjointed. Shot in grainy, post-war black & white. Even Shelley Winters couldn't make it interesting.
