Ruth Rouw, Pauline Ulderink on mandolin and Tom Edskes on guitar, three young pupils of the Dutch guitar and mandolin teacher Alex Timmerman, perform Ionian folk music as adapted and arranged for two mandolins and guitar by the Greek composer Victor Kioulaphides. The Ionian Mandolinata performed here is one of three anthologies of Greek folk music. The other two are titled the Athenian- and Aegean Mandolinata. Each of them forms an excellent set of pieces that can perfectly be used for didactic purposes as well as for musical performances. Besides the Mandolinatas, Kioulaphides composed several other compositions for the instruments of the mandolin family like the Diferencias sobre Morenika, the Idillio and El Malecón for solo mandolin, the Spanish Suite for mandola and guitar and the Concerto per orchestra a pizzico for Mandolin Orchestra. This last composition was dedicated to the Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra ´HET CONSORT of which the musicians recorded on this video, are among the youngest members. Victor Kioulaphides was born in Athens, Greece, and moved to New York in 1979 where he studied double bass and composition at The Juilliard School and The Manhattan School of Music. Today he is a Member of ASCAP, American Music Center, American Federation of Musicians and his compositions are i.e. published by the Liben Music Publishers and the New York Classical Guitar Society. Besides his busy activities as a classical double bass player is a faculty member at the Lucy Moses School for Music and Dance.
The release of the video is authorized by Victor Kioulaphides.
