LibriVox recording of The Manxman by Hall Caine. Read by Tony Ashworth
Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine, CH, KBE (14 May 1853 – 31 August 1931), usually known as Hall Caine, was a British author. He is best known as a novelist and playright of the late Victorian and the Edwardian eras. In his time he was exceedingly popular and at the peak of his success and his novels outsold those of his contemporaries. Many of his novels were also made into films. His novels were primarily romantic in nature, involving the love triangle, but they did also address some of the more serious political and social issues of the day.
He was a lover of the Isle of Man and Manx culture and purchased a large house, Greeba Castle, on the island. For a time he was a Member of the House of Keys.
In 1916 The Manxman, which was produced by the London Film Company, was filmed on the Isle of Man and when it was released in 1917 it drew huge crowds in Britain and America.
The Manxman tells the story of two childhood friends, a poor fisherman, Pete Quilliam, and a lawyer, Philip Christian. Pete is in love with Kate but when her father, Old Caesar refuses to consent to their marriage, Pete sets off for Africa to make his fortune, asking Philip to take care of Kate until he returns... Subject: Love, Superstition, Sacrifice.
Subject: Love, Superstition, Sacrifice.
Young Peter and Kate become betrothed, against the wishes of her father because Peter has no prospects or wealth. Peter is rock solid and faithful; Kate is young and flighty. When Peter goes to South Africa to make his fortune, he entrusts the care and reputation of Kate to his best friend.
In the years that follow, Kate and Philip fall in love. But Philip cannot violate his promise to Peter to guard Kate for him. Besides, the whole island would shun Kate as Philip's wife because she's of a lower class. Marrying her would blight his career and social reputation, just like it did his own father's.
I enjoyed this story. It was hard at first to keep the characters straight in my mind, and the set up of the characters was a bit cumbersome at the beginning of the story, but it was worthwhile. A sad yet beautiful tale.
Audio quality on this isn't the best; the first large chunk of it has a fair amount of background white noise. But don't let that stop you from listening. The reader is very good.
NOTE: Racial terms are used for the workers in the South African diamond fields.
