Subject: Douglas Dumbrille - Film AKA "The Mystery Rider"
Superior western, with a superior, complicated and somewhat deeply emotional plot, comes to life through the work of superior actors and direction by Lesley Selander, as described in his IMDb bio: "He directed his first feature in 1936, a western--a genre in which he would not only excel but one where he would spend much of the rest of his career.
Although Selander couldn't be considered an "A"-list director, his films had a professionalism and a verve that many of those made by his fellow B directors lacked. His sense of pacing was such that his films could be counted on to move quickly and smoothly, and not just his westerns."
And this film has all that, plus his evident rapport with the actors, all of whom give good performances. Douglas Dumbrille and Sidney Toler make an unusual pairing, but are quite convincing as a straight talking, warm hearted outlaw and his deceptively deadly sidekick. Russell Hayden again stands out as a decent cowhand, here in love with Chartlotte Field. Field, according to IMDb, only made two western films and there is no other info in her IMDb bio. However, a search came up with this obituary which mentions that the deceased had a short fling in the movies and the overall description suggest it is the same Field as in this movie:. Weldon Heyburn is good as the conflicted ex-con who finds he can't have everything his way. Monte Blue makes a good villain. And, it is always good to see Glenn Strange in a straight role, although here he doesn't contribute much to the drama. And, filming around Tucson, AZ provides some of the most beautiful and vibrant locations in the westerns genre. Kudos to all concerned.

Subject: A CHANGE OF HABIT
THIS MOVIE FEATURES ACTORS KNOWN TO ME IN MUCH DIFFERENT ROLE THAN WHAT IS THE NORM. IT WAS GOOD TO SEE DOUGLAS DUMBRILLE FINALY GET TO PLAY A GOOD GUY AFTER SO MANY WESTERN BAD GUY ROLES.
CHARLIE CHAN WITH A COWBOY HAT-WHAT A CHANGE. I ALSO KEPT LOOKING FOR HOPALONG CASIDY TO RIDE UP AT ANY MOMENT. NOT A REAL DEEP MOVIE BY ANY MEANS BUT WELL WORTH WATCHING. A GREAT WAY TO SPEND A WINTERS AFTERNOON.

Zane Grey story The Mysterious Rider was revised Paramount Pictures in 1938. Pecos Bill chances arrest by returning to his home town to visit his. He discovers that Collie is about to enter into a loveless marriage.
Seems like a long movie.
