Subject: From the Sheila Watson fonds at the John M. Kelly Library
This is a family scrapbook (20.3 x 31.3 x 5 cm), preserved in the Sheila Watson fonds, the personal and literary papers of the Canadian author and professor of English. It is most likely the creation of Samuel Barclay Martin Junior, Watson’s maternal grandfather from Demopolis, Alabama. The scrapbook appears to have previously been a ledger for accounts, but has been pasted over with news clippings and magazine articles from the 1860s and 1870s chronicling the American Civil War, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, local and national events, as well as a range of poetry, prose and printed ephemera. There is a hand-written index on the back cover.
Researchers wishing to examine the physical copy should request it from the Special Collections at the John M. Kelly Library of the University of St. Michael’s College : Sheila Watson fonds – Personal Records, artwork and artifacts – Doherty and Martin family records – Martin family scrapbook. (Fonds 2006 01, Series 12, File 2006 01 969, Item 1).
