It would have been easy for Max Creek to mail in a big, drunken, guest-riddled nostalgia-bomb on this, the last of three 40th anniversary shows for the venerable old band. But nobody who's ever been afforded the pleasure of Max Creek brain-surgery would ever expect that. For this band, and for the three-thousand odd ducks keeping close track of them, the live setting is the only setting. For the "Creek Freeks" (and - I'd expect - for the band itself) 40 years isn't just an excuse to celebrate a storied past and charge a bit more for tix, but rather, a celebration of a musical relationship in development for almost half a century and paying back BIG dividends in the present.
And Saturday's payoff was one for the books. No reason for song-by-song or even highlights. The evening can be summed up in one imperative: Listen To It.
It's spellbinding, amazing, surprising, dynamic and rockin' like fuck. One huge highlight. I will pick three particularly awesome features of the show but then you gotta go to the lick-log. it's up to you, the listener, to take advantage of this wholly incredible recording.
First: Creek has three drummers, all of them very able, versatile musicians. Usually, they run a two man platoon and work with two kits in performance, one team of two taking the entire night. It is not unheard of, though, for them to change horses mid stream, or in this case, vast, roiling sea. Watch for Greg Deguglielmo joining as noted above. Where the other two Creek skinsmen play it spare, metronomic, and funky-synchopated, DeGugs is just all heart and bashing. He brings Africa to the proceedings. Truly of the unsung MONSTERS in rock-kit play, GDG plays like an acidified combination of John Bonham and Mickey Hart. Also he writes and sings cool tunes, one of which is delivered here with just bass and drums accomp.
Next: The song BABA. That's all.
Last: Cecelia>Jam. Just heat beyond heat. Creek spaz and lurch funkily through the changes and then begin to build and rebuild and demolish melodic skyscrapers of backbeat and guitar/keys/bass ensemble raging. Like being inside a Niagra falls barrell that somehow bounces back up, and then keeps going till it get gravity-sucked by the rings of saturn or the mons of fucking Venus.
This is the shit. The very existence of a band like Max Creek offers hope and optimism. Nobody could ever be "good" enough to deserve a Creek in their lives.
OK,
JH
