"Umi no drone" (Drones of the sea) is an epic work of deeply emotional/dramatic drones. Starting from total silence to an organic soundscapes and droning atmospheres that remind us the underwater life. Perfect for some intense headphone listening, late nights, an album for those who seek a more unusual experience.

I've been returning to this lost ambient masterpiece for about 15 years. I've no idea who made it (beyond the name 'Hakoneko') and am not aware of any other works. Despite this obscurity, it's in my top 10 ambient albums.
The placid, slowly-evolving bass drones of the 30-minute centrepiece 'Siphonophore' descend through the murk into a place of complete immersion and tranquility. Although not 'composed', it still feels like a satisfying musical journey. There's an innocence and single-mindedness to this music which I find unique and refreshing.
The shorter tracks also deliver. These five pieces (six including an outro) are extremely bass-heavy, droning and patient, bringing to mind the unhurried pulse of the ocean. Opener 'Submarine' is the most melodic, incorporating some stark, higher-pitched chords and setting the stage for the following low-frequency soundscapes.
I like this album. I'd love to hear more from this artist, who clearly has a talent for ambience, but as far as I know, this is their only recorded work. Does anyone know anything more about Hakoneko?

It's minimal/dark time again. I love dark droning pieces like this and this is no exception. Needs to be listened in full and with a lot of attention, so you can savor each dark driplet of sound. Or, you can just put it in the background, drone away and do something else beside it, like studying or reading. That's what I'm doing now and however you listen to it, it works fine either way. Thumbs up!
