Subject: at the Avalon
MMJ at the Avalon was a tight show, I got there early and stood only three rows back from the stage. The acoustics of the Avalon (no longer a venue) were unbelievable, probably the best of any show i've been to so far. The recording is excellent (too many side conversations at times), but it was nothing compared to actually being there, the music surrounded and consumed me. And I wasn't one of the fans in the crowd watching motionless. Damn did I get into the music. All that said I came to the show sober and MMJ got me high, and I'm no stranger to the feeling.
I've seen MMJ three times now and this one was by far my favorite. Thank you to all involved in taping and posting this amazing show.

Subject: What A Lovely Night
This was a magnificent show, wracked with fragility and quivering to the threshold of a burst balloon, the band raking their everloving hearts out as they do night after night. One of the astonishing characteristics of this brilliant outfit is how James and Co. summon their demons and angels without remorse, irrespective of - and even oblivious to - the minor leanings within the crowd. On this particular night, Boston's serial soul constipation was in full effect, a cramped collective of yearning fans who just couldn't get it on, always on the very verge of something big, but too petrified to let loose and just dance. But the band didn't care, and that is a remarkable suspension of disbelief. They brought the flood anyhow.
Speaking of which, this evening included the emergence of the notorious "pee'er", an audience member who racked up several pages of audience speculation on The Jacket's Forum Web Page. Yep, it's confirmed that an audience member was so twisted with psychosis that he failed to adjourn to the nearest bathroom. You gotta love a show that wrings the towel like that.
Highlights: A lovely Just One Thing caught my throat; Phone Went West was a fine treat; Jim James elucidated impromptu the finer points of The Avalon venue's acoustic appeal; Dondante haunted the halls with endless sax; the Boston Horns lent flair to revive the fine summery gem Easy Morning Rebel.
Download this recording, and be the crowd we wish we were.
