Shut The Hell Up
I was at all 3 of these New Years shows for My Morning Jacket. Let me just say that these guys are getting better and better each time I see them. The music in combination with the lighting was simply phenomenal. My friend that I took to the shows had never heard them before but he was totally enthralled by every song. I was afraid he would find the music too “mainstream” since he seems to only like “eclectic” (poorly produced garage-like bands) music which is popular to nobody but heavy drinkers with big attitudes. So I was very happy that he was enjoying the shows as much as I did, not that I really cared if he did or not....LOL.
I have one thing to ask about the MORONS that go to concerts these days: Why the hell do most of these idiots even go to concerts? They talk loudly, drunkenly and very obnoxiously over every song. It doesn't make any sense to me that people go to see bands they pretend to like and then don't pay any attention to the music. It's completely rude to the musicians and to the real fans of the artists. These MMJ concerts at the Filmore were almost unbearable in the amount of noise generated by the audience during the performance. This is a small venue but sounded like a friggin' coliseum by the amount of loud conversations and yelling. I have been going to concerts since 1979 and this is something that seems to be a recent development and is getting worse and worse. It makes going to see shows like these very tiresome.
Okay, that is my rant. These were some of the greatest shows that I have seen in years. I can't wait to see them again. Sometimes you go to a show and end up liking the band less than you had before you saw the show. Others, like these shows, make you more enthralled by the artists and that is something that will last a forever. I will never forget how amazing MMJ sounded these nights despite the venue being filled with out of control children.

another incredible night with MMJ
caveat here is that i'm the taper, so take the 5 stars with a grain of salt... stars are more for the show than the recording (though i think it sounds pretty good for a simple rig).
MMJ at the fillmore is just a magical pairing... and this middle night of the new year's run was fantastic. highlights for me included the aforementioned, seldom-played "rollin' back" and a beautiful "nashville to kentucky." all the rockers were typically blistering. can't wait to see what kind of slot these guys get at bonnaroo this year.
