Jonas CrenshawJonas Crenshaw's Colossal Failure [MMM021] (October 15, 2002)

mmm021.jpgA couple of years back, Jonas Crenshaw (who has been linked to Oval-Teen, Pets or Meat, and The Paper Airplane Pilots) got it into his head to write a bunch of songs and make a proper "country" album.

After spending months writing and recording he came up with one of the finest albums of "the genre" and not knowing what to do with the end result (not known for touring), he decided to shelve it.

After overhearing a cassette copy at the home of Oval-Teen's Bradley Davis (now of Lake Holiday) and discovering its unreleased status, I wrote Jonas and begged permission to release the CD. As his plans included "a pressing of roughly seven copies to be hand delivered exclusively to friends and family," I feel very lucky that Jonas has allowed its release here.

Recorded by Daver at One Room Studios in Illinois, the recordings about drinkin', womanizin', lovin' and leavin' feature the talents of pedal steel of Mississippi Music Hall of Famer Dusty Nall (featured on the recordings of The Louvin Brothers, Slim Whitman, Ernest Tubb, etc.).

Jonas lives in currently lives in Joliet, IL. There is a prison there. Jonas also records with Sam Gwin.

Check out these other fine My Mean Magpie Releases.

Subject: alt country is a-ok
For any of those clo-mind listeners that immediately criticise country music, you probably haven't given "alternative" country a chance. This stuff is absolutely great... all of it!

Jonas Chrenshaw's album is no exception. It has an almost sarcastic wit of modern lyricism that likens to the old crow medicine show but is entangled with some traditional country arrangements and even offers bits of cheese once in a while. How could you miss?

BTW... FLAC?!?!? hell-yea!
