Subject: Decent recording, putrid tracking
Subject: Decent recording, putrid tracking
And so we come to the final of my brief, scatterbrained thoughts on the three archive.org'd recordings of the 7/12/2010 show moe. performed at the Weesner. Let me preface what may come across as a somewhat testy review by extending my gratitude to the taper, Mike Mahoney, for attending and documenting the show for moe.rons everywhere. It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often how indebted we as listeners are to those who record and share such wonderful music. And of course, it's all thanks to the forward-thinking attitude moe. has towards audience recordings (and the good people at the LMA) that such a vast bounty of music is available for quick-access listening.
Now, with that in mind: The recording here is none too shabby - definitely better-sounding than the poorly-dithered "busman" version provided by Cliff Morse, and comparable with the "schoeps" version recorded by "perks" - the drums have a bit more echo / hall ambience than either of the aforementioned versions, and this is probably the most muddy-sounding of the three, but the muddiness is hardly at buzzkill levels or anything.
But the tracking - ugh, it warrants a paragraph all its own. In three words: "absolute zero effort". Medleys joined together to create hour-long tracks, and splitting Moth up over two separate tracks just reeks of laziness. Sure, it's easy to track this way in CDWAV - just look for the parts where the waveform tapers off, and click accordingly - but the result is a really annoying presentation for those of us who often find ourselves streaming our collections across a network (for instance, if I'm in my car and want to plug my cellphone into the stereo and listen to Bearsong, I'll have to download about 100MB of mp3 over 3G before I can actually track to the appropriate position). Like I mentioned in my review of the "schoeps"/perks version, as a taper I'll be the first to say that tracking and filenaming is the most tedious part of sharing a show - but as a listener, I hasten to add that it's tedium well-spent.
I guess my multiple reviews of this particular show have caused me to come across as a bit of a one-track... er... trick pony, but it really is a shame when someone goes through the considerable effort to attend and record a show, then just trips up on the home stretch and circulates something that's sub-standard and could so easily be fixed. Now all those who wish to make a properly-tracked version will end up circulating a version with different .FLAC fingerprints, which makes it even more confusing later on down the line when completely different .FFP files refer to the exact same recording.
The show itself, as I said in my other reviews, is definitely a keeper - a fun animal-themed setlist full of lesser-played numbers, and a very nice, jammy meat. Nothing to complain about on that front.
Five stars for the show, four stars for the recording, but the poor tracking drags this down a notch.
