Notes
Jim Louglin was the kit drummer at this show, as Vinnie was sick and unable to perform.
Tea Leaf Green played just before moe. on the same stage. You can download or stream the TLG set from this same source here: http://archive.org/details/tlg2012-07-14.tlm170.flac16
Thanks to Justin Marinoff for driving out to this show!
I scrubbed a ton of loud claps from near my microphones during this set, plus EQ'd to minimize a couple of loud whistles and yells. The Long Island crowd was very boisterous.
Recorded, mastered, and tracked by Scott Bernstein (7/28-31/2012)

Subject: My review of this set....
When they announced this show, we had no way of knowing that Vinnie was going to be sick with adult Mono and unable to play, and that the band was going to choose to cancel their tour so as not to be forced to play without Vinnie. What most newer fans don't know is that Jim, the band's percussionist and utility instrument player (vibraphone, malletkat, piccolo bass, acoustic guitar, in addition to percussion) was their 2nd drummer (handing the drum kit slot over to Mike Strazza on 7/22/95 when he left the band to join Yolk full-time) before returning to the band. So after being ordered to sit out all gigs after the NYC shows, Jim stepped up to the kit to save the day for 2 shows in Pennsylvania before the band cancelled the rest of the tour. There were just a couple of festival gigs that they couldn't get out of (including this one at Great South Bay) and Jim filled in on the kit for these.
Of course I LOVE Vinnie on drums and Jim playing all sorts of instruments, I remember what a powerful drummer Jim was in the old days and the fact that he would be manning the kit for this show made me all the more excited for it!
Choosing to focus their set on a majority of tunes from their new album "What Ever Happened To The La Las", the bad played really well and with a lot of energy -- tunes they were clearly psyched to be playing, not the "same old stuff" they've been playing for years. Stumping me with the new-ish "Smoke" right out of the gate that I had to turn to Jenn Ritchie to identify, the song has been stuck in my brain for 2 weeks ever since (give this one a listen if you haven't -- it'll stick in your brain too). Continuing with an amped-up "Akimbo" (powered by a ROCKIN' drummer), and an awesome "Haze" from the new album, Rob unleashes a major "Paper Dragon" that does manage to breathe fire. A MUST HEAR. This is followed by "Puebla", the first tune in their setlist from this night that usually features a prominent vibraphone in the mix from Jim, who was of course busy playing drums. It was refreshing to hear how they covered for this -- Al playing some keys on his moog and Chuck doing some really cool, subtle guitar parts underneath. Worth a listen just to hear that. The band continues to ROCK OUT in "Brent Black" (again you can clearly her the difference in Jim's playing on this tune). Following, they bang out a very quick uptempo "She Sends Me" (everything is a bit faster with Jim on drums) another rocker with "The Pit" and an awesome new one -- Al's 2-part masterpiece "Downward Facing Dog", featuring his distorted vocals....
Even though they were pretty much out of time, Rob took a request from "a little mermaid" to play her favorite song "Rebubula" as the encore. They did as compact a version as possible (no spacy jam before the final reprise), but even then the song clocks in over 15 minutes and you can hear them playing as fast as they possible can near the end. Makes for pretty thrilling music! :)
The recording generally sounds really good as we parked ourselves just 40 feet from the stage (it was windy and the sound was blowing around too much even 20 feet back where the other tapers were). It was pretty bassy where we were, so I very lightly rolled off some bass from my recording. Keep in mind that it takes about 2 songs for Steve Young to really lock in the sound mix, so don't judge the sound of this recording by the 1st tune. Also, the local Long Island crowd was EXTREMELY vocal, so you'll hear some shouts of joy (and someone inexplicably SCREAMING at the top of their lungs the opening lyrics to "Captain America" about 3/4 times between songs).
