"this ep is a collection of past unreleased tracks partly made in 2001 & 2002. some elements are older, for example the melody on the first track was composed 5 years ago on my first keyboard. i chose to entitle it the parthenay ep, because parthenay is the small town where i come from and i like the way it sounds, a bit like an english word. i'm happy to collaborate with 'autres directions in music' because stephane is a nice guy with beautiful shoes and i like the fact that people can make their own selection and have my tracks for free." melodium (melodium.box@laposte.net)

Wir heißen ein neues Netlabel aus Frankreich herzlich willkommen. Als Stratschuss gibt es fünf Melodium-Tracks, aufgefüllt mit Remixen. Bei Melodium findet man immer Sachen, die man mag und dann auch wieder Tracks, die einem gleich zum Hals raus kommen. Hier im Netz ist alles prima. Sehr warm und dichte Poptracks, bei denen man sich fragt, warum sie denn noch nicht "in Wirklichkeit" rausgekommen sind - entschuldigt meine ekelhafte Idee vom Plattenladen als Nabel der Welt. Ja also, ich liebe diese Tracks hier. Die Remixe auch. Motenai & Mimao, Dudley und Depth Affect konzentrieren sich auf die Essenz der Tracks, holen ihre eigenen Instrumente raus und rocken los. Sweet, rund und wunderbar.

L'excellent webzine Autres Directions (chroniques, interviews, MP3s) a décidé d'aller jusqu'au bout de sa démarche en devenant aussi depuis peu un label de musique électronique. Label et site MP3 dont on peut télécharger les titres et les pochettes des disques, ou commander le CD-R, Autres Directions In Music associe l'éthique "Do It Yourself" aux nouvelles technologies et propose des disques qui ne sont pas de moins bonnes musique qu'ailleurs. En témoignent ce Seasonal LP de Dudley, deuxième sortie du label, après le très joli Parthenay EP de Mélodium.
Le Lyonnais Stéphane Bossard, aka Dudley, entre manipulations numériques et pop doucement psychédélique, s'amuse de la répétition des formes et des légères déclinaisons qu'il leur imprime, ses morceaux instrumentaux relevant de processus et de dispositifs sonores, simples et attachants. Ces work-in progress, aux développements visibles, utilisent principalement beats hip-hop et ritournelles aux claviers ou guitares, entre krautrock anecdotique et sérialisme pop. Adequat, répétitif et léger, propose des nappes des petit synthé et des arpèges de guitare en boucle sur des rythmiques hi-hopisantes, ponctuées de breaks légers et de pitches intempestifs, le morceau évoluant doucement vers une calme déréliction. Fall song décline des motifs de guitares acoustiques hispanisantes, de bruits d'avions qui s'abîment et d'éphémères envolées orchestrales. Little whirl est percussif, inachevé et cheap, réexploitant les cris James Browniens du premier hip-hop sur des percus multiples. Let-down varie les genres rythmiques, parfois un peu lourds, sur des ambiances inquiétantes à la Boards Of Canada. The Flower that eats the moon se compose d'une mélodie d'orgue en boucle, de rythmiques hip-hop ou aquatiques étouffées et de bribes de voix en anglais. With rain recèle guitares, souffle de vent et sortes de flûtes de pan... En tout, 9 titres instrumentaux, simples et attachants, pour une démarche qui mériterait peut-être quelques efforts de production ou de se radicaliser réellement.
Le Parthenay EP de Mélodium nous semble plus attachant encore, en tout cas plus abouti et personnel. Sur cinq titres inédits et trois remixes, l'electronica douce et retenue de Laurent Girard s'avère très séduisante. Avec Ichtio et ses glitches aquatiques, ses grésillements subtils et ses petites mélodies, Laurent Girard débute ce EP tout en délicatesse. Entre ritournelles enfantines et amples plages atmosphériques, Melodium utilise les effets numériques (delays, légères saturations) à des fins poétiques, travaillant d'abord la fragilité et le détail d'une musique ouverte et sensible. Les remixs de Dudley, Depth Affect et Motenai explorent avec finesse les interstices laissés ouverts par Melodium et se réapproprient efficacement les canevas mélodiques ou rythmiques du nantais. Les 5 titres présentés ici n'ont rien à envier à une production mainstream en CD sur un label distribué, et il faut saluer le désir du label et de l'artiste de proposer gratuitement une musique de qualité. En espérant que la démarche porte ses fruits et développe de nouvelles habitudes de "consommation" (basées sur la participation et la solidarité par exemple)...

The Parthenay EP is the first release from Nantes, France-based Autres Directions In Music (ADIM). The label prides itself on its DIY philosophy, offering free and legal downloads of each of its releases to the public through its official website. This EP, consists of five original compositions, as well as remixes of three of the featured tracks by fellow ADIM contributors Motenai and Mimao, Dudley and Depth Affect. The sheer quality of all the featured tracks indicates that downbeat electronic music enthusiasts should keep an eye on ADIM and its varied roster.
Opener "Ichtio" is a pretty example of Morr-inspired glitch. Opening with a subdued keyboard strain reminiscent of Moon Safari-era Air, it is gradually bathed in computerized acid blips and sounds. Its slightly hard-edged conclusion, with forced beats contrasting a slight melody, sets the standard for the rest of the EP.
Melodium main-man Laurent Girard's compositions, like a lot of exciting electronic music, thrive on the continuous juxtaposition of subdued melodies and harsher noise. It's most notable on "Pause1" and "Pluraple", both of which feature white noise and static discharges layered across unassuming keys and drones. The distinctions between the varying sounds allow the pieces to avoid the monotony that much ambient electronica falls into.
The featured remixes effectively build upon Melodium's compositions. Motenai and Mimao's interpretation of "Ichtio" transforms the track into a slightly more upbeat affair, with layered 4/4 house beats pulsing over the meandering glitch sounds. Depth Affect remodel "Terminus" into an ambient hip-hop mash-up likely to appeal to fans of Clouddead and the like, layering sample after sample over the track's original drones. The standout remix, however, is contributed by Lyon-based Dudley. His rendering of the EP's final cut, "Mmiomm", is a near-perfect blend of organic and digital sounds. Opening with a lo-fi guitar loop and dense breakbeat, the track gradually escalates towards a rousing midsection where synths, strings and samples coagulate. The piece offers a preview of Dudley's forthcoming Seasonal LP, which is set to be ADIM's second release and should be available for download by the time you read this.
Whilst not nearly as psychedelically mind-fucking as Boards Of Canada, the IDM paragons whose work Melodium most seems to echo, Melodium's sound remains engagingly diverse. By turns sweet and straightforward and dark and atmospheric, Girard's compositions demand attention. While Parthenay is a highly enjoyable and interesting EP, largely for the amount of talent it has exposed, the inclusion of the three remixes highlights its role as an introduction to the artist/s and the label that released it. With any luck, Melodium's upcoming full-length will provide an even clearer picture of his personal sound and the direction in which he's headed. Rob Moran

Normalerweise sind elektronische Internet-only Labels ja nicht wirklich mein Fall, da leider viel zu oft Quantität über Qualität siegt. Bei Autres Directions aus Nantes, Frankreich ist das zum Glück anders und die ersten zwei Releases sind nun bereit auf euren Rechner herunterzusegeln.
Angefangen haben Autres Directions als Webzine mit überaus glücklichem Händchen für Musikauswahl. Da war es auch nicht wirklich unwahrscheinlich, dass beim jüngst gegründeten Weblabel-offshoot ebenso interessante Musiker bereit waren ihre Tracks zu Verfügung zu stellen. Einen Link zum kostenlosen Download gibt’s weiter unten und wer faul oder nur mit niedriger Bandbreite gesegnet ist, kann die Releases auch inklusive Cover für 5,-€ bestellen.
Als erste Veröffentlichung wurde Melodium’s Parthenay Ep bereitgestellt. Das Projekt von Laurent Girard könnte einigen noch von schönen 7“es auf Static Caravan in Erinnerung sein. Hier hat er einige Outtakes und ansonsten unveröffentlichte Stücke zusammengestellt. All diese Tracks haben eine sonderbar schwermütige Niedlichkeit, die schon wirklich unverschämt schön ist. Hier ist wirklich Qualität drin und nach dem zweiten Bier kann man schon ganz schön berührt werden, wenn die Platte erklingt. Ich rede da aus Erfahrung! Musikalisch immer knietief in der Knusperelektronica mit einigen groovigen Triphopexkursen, die entweder direkt auf die Tränendrüse gehen oder auch nur heimeliges Wohlbefinden hervorrufen. Zudem gibt es gleich noch ein paar feine Remixe der Originaltracks von Motenai & Mimao, Dudley und Depth Effect. Echt super, bitte sofort downloaden! Der zweite Release kommt von Dudley aus Ville sur Jarnioux, Frankreich. Stephane Bossard arbeitete auf seinem Debüt vornehmlich mit geraden, leicht gebrochenen und schon fast triphoppig anmutenden Beats. Durch den überschwänglichen Gebrauch von Zupfgitarren und analogen Synthesizern kommt eine an guten Postrock erinnernde Stimmung auf, die immer leicht traurig und unheimlich verspielt ist. Mit leise eingestreuten Orchestersamples schafft Monsieur Bossard einen warmen Klangteppich, der ganz selten mal kitschig aber viel öfter verdammt cool ist und das auch noch auf kompletter Longplayerlänge. Wer Boards of Canada mag, sollte sich dies hier mal genauer betrachten!

Let’s face it, free music can often be of a lower standard - afterall, the reason it’s free is no label is willing to shell out big bucks for something average. ADIM on the other hand are different, what with a fully established recording artist on their roster in the form of Melodium.
After several physical appearances on such influential labels as Static Caravan, you can already begin to imagine the quality of music on display. Constructed using an array of delicate sounds, Melodium’s approach to electronica is a minimal use of synths and a sparse sequencing of beats.
The display of lush, dreamy melodies and warm digital layers reach an almost organic feel, not too dissimilar to Isan and Montag. Rich textures, catchy riffs and an increasing use of repetition lead to a completely hypnotised sound, and basically a lot of fun.
Remixes from fellow label-mates Dudley & Depth Affect are a fitting showcase of the further depth and talent this label possesses. Dudley takes ‘Mmiomm’ on an acoustic tip, combining guitar loops & drum breaks. While Depth goes all electronic hip-hop, sampled rapping & more hard beats. Taking the originals to new heights, the way remixes should be.

Désireux de ne pas se limiter aux commentaires musicaux, l’élégant webzine Autres Directions a choisi de se lancer dans la production discographique. Naturellement porté sur l’électronique et le numérique, le site nantais va jusqu’au bout de sa démarche en proposant les sorties d’Autres Directions in Music en libre téléchargement (morceaux en MP3 et artwork en .zip) ; pour les amoureux de l’objet disque et les possesseurs d’un modem 56k, la commande d’un CD-R est néanmoins prévue. Première référence d’une discographie que l’on souhaite pléthorique, Parthenay EP nous permet de retrouver cinq inédits de Melodium et des remixes de trois de ces morceaux.
Se situant encore une fois à un très bon niveau, Laurent Girard nous ravit d’entrée avec un Ichtio aux sonorités aquatiques mises en exergue, aux grésillements délicats et à la mélodie affirmée. Volontiers portées sur des ambiances enfantines, les productions de Melodium savent parfois également s’affranchir de ce schéma avant de tomber dans une certaine routine : ainsi, Pause1 et Pluraple développent une part plus sombre de la musique du jeune nantais, conjuguant mélodie claire et textures saturées, légèrement inquiétantes. Aussi à l’aise dans ces climats que dans ceux précédemment explorés, le musicien français confirme sans mal sa valeur après son remarquable album du premier semestre. Enfin, Mmiomm, morceau peut-être un peu noyé sous les breaks, se distingue toutefois par sa mélodie attachante.
Le premier remixe qui nous est proposé est celui du titre d’ouverture par Motenai et Mimao. Si l’on connaît le premier nommé via son intéressant disque sur Effervescence, on découvre à cette occasion le second, musicien angevin, récent auteur d’un CD-R. Les compères s’emparent d’Ichtio et n’en gardent que la trame, y ajoutant une basse marquée et une rythmique enlevée. Par la suite, on fait la connaissance de Dudley (dont on reparlera bientôt, auteur qu’il est de la deuxième référence d’Autres Directions in Music) qui charme par son remix particulièrement original de Mmiomm : reprenant à la guitare la mélodie originalement jouée au Casio et épurant les rythmiques, le compositeur lyonnais fait du morceau initial un nouveau titre. Enfin, Depth Affect, duo nantais, utilise les sources de Terminus (sans avoir préalablement entendu celui-ci), les retravaille, les agence différemment, y ajoute des samples vocaux issus du hip-hop et propose, au final, un titre évidement différent de l’original, mais contenant des passages reconnaissables. 6/8

This is an alternative that has found some labels as opposed to the costs that means to consider an edition and distribution. This is the case of Autres Directions in Music based on the city of Nantes, France. This disc of unreleased tracks made between 2001 and 2002 corresponds to the work of the French Laurent Girard, also of the city of Nantes. His musical production has been released on Static Caravan, Disaster Of Choice, Active Suspension, Peter I'm Flying Pan and Grounded Records. This album consists of 8 tracks of which 3 are remixes. Girard gives delicate melodies, fractured rhythms, loops and microscopic noises. A childish melody is the opening to this Ep with "Ichtio"; while "Terminus", one of my favorite cuts, hypnotizes by its harmonic sequences. On the other hand, Pluraple, a symbiosis between Aphex Twin and Autechre, lets feel their acid blows and sounds. The Remixes and to begin the one of "Ichtio", Motenai and Mimao print more beat to it with the use of drums, bass and guitar. "Mmiomm" it is remixed by Dudley, and it has a wonderful guitar tunes and a low-fi sound, transforming the original cut into a phychedelic piece. Finally Depth Affect's remix has an interesting galactic hip-hop. This magnificent affluent EP could belong to the catalogue of Portland's Audio Dregs label.

Este disco de temas inéditos entre 2001 y 2002 corresponde al trabajo del francés Laurent Girard, también de la ciudad de Nantes. Su producción musical ha sido editada por Static Caravan, Disaster Of Choice, Active Suspension, Peter I'm Flying Pan y Grounded Records. Este álbum consta de 8 temas de los cuales 3 están remezclados. Girard nos entrega delicadas melodías, ritmos fracturados, loops y ruidos microscópicos. Una melodía ingenua, casi infantil es la apertura a este EP con "Ichtio"; en tanto "Terminus" uno de mis cortes favoritos hipnotiza por sus secuencias armónicas y "Pluraple", una simbiosis entre Aphex Twin y Autechre, deja sentir sus golpes y sonidos ácidos. Las remezclas y para empezar la de "Ichtio", Motenai y Mimao le imprimen más ritmo con la utilización de batería, bajo y guitarra. "Mmiomm" es remezclado por Dudley, tiene unos maravillosos acordes de guitarra y un sonido low-fi, transformando el tema original en una pieza de rock psicodélico. Por último la remezcla que hace Depth Affect tiene una interesante carga hip-hop galactico de excelente factura. Este magnífico disco bien podría pertenecer al catálogo del sello de Portland Audio Dregs.
