Aleksi Virta - ..Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge [mtk123] (0)

try new player!embedding and help

Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet.

So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae Herb', through the incredible skank of 'Whirlwind Pistols Dub', even up to the end-theme beauty of 'Princess Melodiae'. Isn't it almost unseemly that this is a valiant attempt to snatch album of the year, and it's only January 1st? Cheeky, that's what we call it. In the meantime, you can read the helpful information which came in the CDR packaging:

'Our interstellar secret agent superhero rids the world of the evil curse of the misunderstood vicious madman (yet again) - starring: Aleksi Virta as the heroic secret agent extravaganza, Gavrila Nebula as the beautiful action heroine, Torsti as the misunderstood evil scientist madman, Carolina as the mysterious space gypsy princess.'

..and, indeed, you can learn more about Aleksi Virta's spacecapades via his twisted chroniclings - and long may they continue.

Subject: Electic electronica--love Nebulae Herb

Aleksi Virta is a young Finnish electronic musician whose music is described as cosmic-funk and eclectic. He hasn’t settled on a style yet; he seems to be trying on many different hats in his Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge (which was one of the first musical pieces I heard at archive.org). I loved it then, and started listening randomly to it today, loving it even more. The cosmic-funk description sounds about right. Lots of sampling, random voices, hard beats, unexpected arrangements and instruments.

True Dwelling Place is a jumpy, eerie piece with a fluttering almost hypnotic quality during the slower parts. Whirlwind Pistols Dub is a reggae funk beat with a fun harmonica melody trapped inside. Cosmos Bossa is a silly tooting bit of work, reminiscient of Ugress’s Swing e Sesso (which in my book is the ultimate compliment). Nebulae Herb (my favorite Track 2) is a hard pounding dance number with great organ background. O Tema de Viagem Especial has a jazzy South American feel, with rapid horns and lots of pounding.

Subject: One of the best

This really is one of the best free releases to be found on the web, if you're at all into intelligent electronic music. It's one that I return to again and again... it's one of the first and the few that I recommend to people who are unfamiliar with the free-music scene.

If you're lucky enough to have stumbled onto this page, or someone has directed you here: download the album. It's a real treat, and you simply can't beat the price. ;)

Simply one of the best!

Subject: Wow ... great! Groovy...

Hmm, last night I was at a concert with Ugress (www.ugress.com) and Sternklang. These bands reminds me a bit of this album. Great. Just great. Wonderful beats, laid-back samples and the groove is all over the album. This is marvelous. No more, no less.

A very professional blend of dubs beats and samples. I also love the cover-art (far to neglected not used).
