Chris Edwards60th Annivesary Nakba Commemoration

Manchester England. 15th May 2008. Palestinians and Palestine solidarity activists gather in Piccadilly Gardens in central Manchester to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the nakba or catastrophe when the state of Israel was declared on the basis of the ethnic cleansing of the resident population. 700,000 Palestinians were driven from their villages at gun point by Zionist colonisers with the connivance of Britain. This clip show 60 black balloons being released. One for each year of the existence of Israel.

Subject: No Ethnic Cleaniing?
Hey, Bruno, your comment is typical of the appalling ignorance of much of the Israeli population about the history of Palestine. The bulk of the Israeli population sits in its gated communities and settlements, driving along its Isreali-only roads and never gets to see the Palestinians in their ghettos on the other side of the walls and fences. They have very little idea about the reality of what is going on in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza. And they never get to hear about the real history--fed as they are on a highly selective diet of self-serving propaganda and, yes, disinformation.

The Palestinian nation did not exist in 1948? Yes indeed--and pigs fly. There was no ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by the Zionist colonisers? This is no longer disputed even by Israeli historians--right and left. One of Israel's most distinguished historians, Benny Morris, fully acknowledges that this happened on a large scale. Go read Israeli historian Ilan Pappé's book: "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine"--he was driven out of Haifa University for stating the truth and now teaches at Exeter University in England. Read Alan Hart's two volume history of Palestine: "Zionism: the Main Enemy of the Jews." He is a former BBC Middle East correspondent who personally knew all the main players over the past 40 years. Open your eyes and ears and learn.

Subject: You must know the facts before you go on
Guys,
There are so many mistakes and disinformation in this short clip that it is hard for me to even decide where to start ...Well ... here it goes:

1. In 1948, the newborn Jewish nation fought against the local Arab nations which were Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. Although taking an active part in the war there was NO formal Palestinian nation. Meaning - the Israeli nation did not end the Palestinian nation since the later did not exist. The Israeli nation was founded in 1948 while the FIRST Palestinian council gathering was in 1964.

2. Seeking for independence, the Palestinians turned to their 'Arab brothers' and demanded their rights from Egypt and Jordan. In the last 60 years the Egyptians and Jordanians KILLED numerous Palestinians. No one actually know how many but it is in the thousands. In foreign eyes this is viewed as an 'internal issue'. Why don't you people protest against Jordan or Egypt? Ever heard about Black September?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_September_in_Jordan

3. For the last 60 years there has never been peace or even true efforts for seas-fire from the Palestinians side. Formerly terrorist which became leaders with no moral obligation even towards their own people came to power. These leaders had cynically used the poor Palestinian nation to their own personal goals. For example, try to find out where are the billions that Arafat and other Palestinian leaders got from world-wide Palestinian supporters.

4. Although being 33 years old and serving in the Israeli army, never have I heard or encountered "Palestinian Ethnic Cleansing". I don’t believe that any Israeli citizen ever did. For the sensitive Jewish nation this term is unthinkable and 'saved' for Hitler. Israel did not, is NOT and will not ethnically cleanse Palestinians. If Israel was cleansing Palestinians, would we do this?

5. Before the Israeli pull-out there was a great sense of peace in the Israeli side only to find that our cities and civilians are now under fire from the Palestinian side. These bombings are almost a daily routine.

6. Palestinian terrorists are daily attacking border checkpoints. By doing so they deny humanitarian aid and provision. Their strategy is to keep the Palestinians people ignorant and endlessly suffering in order to keep them committed to the war effort.

What really bugs me is that this disinformation and ignorance is virally spread. Many of you people do not check the facts and end up supporting terrorists. That is not the kind of support the Palestinians people really need. Denouncing Israel is not helping anything but only flames hate in both sides.

Instead, try to support and encourage Palestinian EDUCATION, CIVIL and HUMAN RIGHTS and SECULARISTIC way of life. Hopefully, this way, the majority will understand that reality is shaped by individuals and every person is be able to make decision for himself and will NOT relay on falsification of information.

Peace.
Bruno
